The conference, attended by 23 ministers, 43 delegations from member countries and international organizations, discussed the contents to be signed at the G20 Summit, taking place on November 19-20 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Brazilian Agriculture Minister Carlos Favaro assessed that this conference achieved positive results, opening up new prospects and directions for world agriculture.

According to him, after 5 years of discussion, this is the first time the agricultural sector has received consensus from G20 members and a joint statement has been issued.

The Declaration includes a commitment to safeguarding global food security by adopting sustainable agricultural production practices, emphasizing the role of family farming, farmers, indigenous peoples and traditional communities in agricultural economic development, the need to promote international trade, as well as the fight against climate change.

The issue of deforestation was also addressed, with all delegates attending the Conference agreeing to emphasize the need to protect biodiversity in agricultural development, and to encourage the integration of fisheries and aquaculture into global value chains to ensure food security for the world.

The document also affirms the importance of partnership and funding models to support farmers in the transition to a more inclusive and efficient food system.

The conference also supported the multilateral cooperation initiative of Brazil, the country holding the G20 Presidency in 2024, through a project called the Global Alliance Against Hunger, while also committing to the transition towards a fair and sustainable energy future, to ensure an inclusive and resilient global food system.

“After five years of failure to reach an agreement, we have overcome our differences and come together to support the development of sustainable and inclusive agriculture and to combat destructive fishing,” said Minister Favaro. “This declaration marks a new path for sustainable agriculture and fisheries around the world.”
