Canada has announced a new plan to limit the number of temporary residents it accepts and, for the first time, will publicly announce how many people it will welcome in September.
Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marc Miller said the proportion of foreign workers will initially be reduced from 6.2 per cent to 5 per cent over the next three years. The target for the number of people welcomed into Canada will be set after talks with provincial and territorial representatives about their foreign worker needs this May.
Canada welcomed about 2.5 million new temporary residents last year, including asylum seekers, workers and international students. In January, the North American country also announced plans to cut international students by about 35% by 2024 in an effort to limit the number of temporary residents. The plan will be implemented from September 1 of this year.
