The delegations are led by leaders of the Department of Disease Prevention, Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management and the following institutes: Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology; Pasteur Nha Trang; Pasteur Ho Chi Minh City; and Central Highlands Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology.
The delegations will inspect, monitor, guide and direct the work of disease prevention and control and the implementation of measles vaccination campaigns in provinces and cities in the Northern, Central, Southern and Central Highlands regions, where the number of suspected measles rash fever cases is high or the implementation of measles vaccination campaigns is slow.
According to the Ministry of Health, the number of suspected measles cases recorded was highest in the Southern region (57%), Central region (19.2%), Northern region (15.1%), and Central Highlands (8.7%).
Measles is highly contagious, one person with measles infects 12-18 people and the disease can only be stopped when community immunity reaches at least 95%, much higher than Covid-19. Recently, many localities have been slow to allocate funding for vaccination, and vaccination is slower than the rate of measles spread. Most measles cases are unvaccinated, have not received enough doses of measles vaccine or are not yet at the age to be vaccinated against measles in the Expanded Immunization Program.
The disease has many dangerous complications.
Also today, the Ministry of Health issued an urgent dispatch requesting the People's Committees of provinces and cities to direct specialized agencies to strictly implement the contents according to the direction of the Prime Minister on the request to accelerate measles vaccination and the professional guidance of the Ministry of Health on strengthening the prevention and control of influenza, measles and respiratory diseases. The Ministry of Health shall arrange enough and timely vaccines based on the proposed needs of localities.
The Ministry of Health said that measles is the fastest spreading infectious disease, and can cause many dangerous complications such as otitis media, pneumonia, diarrhea, corneal ulcers, encephalitis, and can easily lead to death. There is no specific treatment for measles, and vaccination is an effective measure to prevent the disease.
To prevent measles, the Department of Disease Prevention (Ministry of Health) recommends that families proactively take children from 9 months to 2 years old who have not been vaccinated or have not received 2 doses of measles vaccine to get fully vaccinated on schedule; other age groups (6 - 9 months, 1 - 10 years old) participate in the measles vaccination campaign according to the instructions of the Ministry of Health.
Do not let children get close to or come into contact with children suspected of having measles; wear masks in crowded places, and wash hands frequently with soap when caring for children.
It is necessary to keep the child's body, nose, throat, eyes and mouth clean every day; ensure nutrition and keep the child's body warm.
Nursery schools, kindergartens, and schools with large numbers of children need to be kept clean, airy, and well-lit; toys, learning tools, and classrooms should be regularly disinfected with common disinfectants.
When detecting signs of suspected measles (fever, cough, runny nose, rash), it is necessary to isolate the child early and take him/her to the nearest medical facility for timely examination and treatment advice.
