By early afternoon on God of Wealth Day (February 7), the price of grilled snakehead fish was only about 80,000 VND/fish, a decrease of 20,000-30,000 VND/fish compared to the morning.
Everywhere in Ho Chi Minh City on January 10 - the day of the God of Wealth, you can easily find places selling golden snakehead fish with a delicious aroma.
Although the market is bustling, according to many traders, the purchasing power of grilled snakehead fish is only half that of previous years.
According to Tuoi Tre Online, although it was only early afternoon, many traders were anxious to reduce prices because they were worried they wouldn't be able to sell all the fish before the end of the day.
Ms. Ho Pham Khanh Linh - a grilled snakehead fish vendor at Ba Chieu market - said that her family has been in the grilled snakehead fish business for over 10 years. Previously, on the God of Wealth holiday, customers crowded from morning to afternoon, and even if they imported 500kg of fish, it would not be enough to sell.
But this year I imported 100kg but still worried I won't be able to sell it all.
"Grilled snakehead fish is an important dish on the God of Wealth's offering tray of many families and businesses. People believe that buying a whole grilled snakehead fish will bring luck and fortune. But this year, instead of snakehead fish, many people have switched to offering dumplings, pork, fruit, etc., which are simpler and more economical," Linh shared.
By early afternoon, there were still about 20kg of grilled snakehead fish left unsold. Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, a vendor at the market, said she had reduced the price by about VND20,000 per fish, hoping to sell all the fish within the day. "The big fish sold for VND120,000 per fish in the morning, now it's VND100,000. The price of the smaller fish has also dropped from VND100,000 to VND80,000," Ms. Tuyet said.
According to Ms. Tuyet, her family used to sell about 200kg of fish, but this year they sold less than half.
The situation is similar at Tan Dinh market (District 1). Ms. NTN fanned the coal while greeting customers: "This big one I sold for 150,000 VND this morning, now I'll give you a discount of 120,000 VND!"
According to many traders, the decline in purchasing power due to the difficult economic situation has caused people to tighten their spending, especially traders and small businesses - the main customer group for grilled snakehead fish on God of Wealth Day.
In previous years, everyone wanted to hold a big ceremony to wish for a prosperous year. But this year, business is difficult, so people hold simpler ceremonies to reduce unnecessary expenses," a trader shared.
