" We will direct the Department of Sports and Physical Training to immediately conduct a general inspection and review of training work at the teams, especially in ensuring facilities, living conditions, and funding according to regulations to meet training requirements. It is necessary to strictly implement legal regulations on the implementation of professional tasks associated with caring for the lives of coaches and athletes at national teams. We are setting a deadline to complete this before October 20. The Ministry is actively implementing it so that it can be handled soon ," Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Trinh Thi Thuy replied at a regular press conference for the third quarter of 2023.
On October 2, social media went viral with images of a meal that was said to cost 800,000 VND for 8 young athletes. Public opinion was outraged when the meal only had 4-5 basic dishes, not commensurate with the amount of money mentioned above. In addition, the breakfast, which was set at 100,000 VND, only had a handful of sticky rice and a bottle of soft drink.

In addition, Coach Bui Xuan Ha is said to have collected money from the athletes. Each person had to pay a different amount to the head coach. This collection of money is not included in the rules and regulations. In meetings from the afternoon of October 3, the Department of Sports and Physical Training recorded reports from the team and related parties, continuing to verify and clarify the matter.
After receiving feedback from the media, the Ministry immediately directed the Department of Sports and Physical Training to coordinate with relevant units to immediately handle the incident. The Department of Sports and Physical Training decided to suspend the entire coaching staff and bring the team back to practice at the National Sports Training Center in Hanoi. The Ministry also requested relevant units to clarify responsibilities, and if there are any violations, they must be strictly handled to improve the quality of training.
Ms. Trinh Thi Thuy informed: " The Hanoi National Sports Training Center does not have enough space to ensure that more than 40 youth teams practice annually (about 1,000 people). Due to difficulties in objective facilities, to meet training needs, the teams must move to facilities of the National Sports Training Center and centers in other localities.
The center will pay monthly salaries and nutrition to coaches and athletes through separate accounts. For the youth table tennis team, food and accommodation from February 2023 will be provided at the National Sports Complex. The Hanoi National Sports Training Center will pay and disburse financial benefits to coaches according to regulations .
According to Ms. Thuy, this is a great lesson for the sports industry. In particular, this is a warning for those who participate in training young athletes but do not really put the goal, the attention on training and the training regime that cares about the athletes' lives above all else, but instead show signs of caring about personal interests first.
