On November 25, Dr. Nguyen Ba Thang, Head of the Neuroscience Center, Head of the Stroke Unit, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City (UMPH), said that the diamond certification is the highest certification for stroke units and centers that meet a series of strict and rigorous standards set by WSO.

The indicators that need to be achieved related to the emergency and stroke treatment process include the time from the hospital door to the injection of clot-dissolving drugs (door-needle time), the time from the time the patient arrives at the hospital door to the needle puncture for thrombectomy (door-intervention time), the rate of patients receiving emergency CT or MRI scans, the rate of stroke patients receiving recanalization treatment...

Door-to-hand time is no more than 30 minutes

Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital has achieved a series of the highest quality indicators in this field. Notable indicators include door-to-needle time (the time from the hospital door to the time of receiving the clot-busting drug) no more than 30 minutes compared to the general standard of less than 60 minutes. Door-to-intervention time is within the optimal level (time from hospital door to thrombectomy); 100% of patients with suspected stroke are diagnosed by CT or MRI within the first 15 minutes, while the standard is 45 minutes.

Most notably, the rate of stroke patients receiving recanalization treatment has now reached more than 25%. No stroke case has been missed or delayed in the process of emergency, treatment and care at the hospital. This is also the result of the continuous efforts of the team of doctors and medical staff in improving the professional quality, facilities and care services of the entire hospital in general and the Stroke Unit in particular.

At the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, there is a complete stroke emergency team available 24/7 at the hospital, including neurologists - stroke specialists, doctors, emergency nurses, doctors and technicians for CT, MRI and endovascular intervention to remove blood clots. With a system of modern machinery and technical equipment, the hospital can perform all advanced stroke emergency techniques in the world.

Application of artificial intelligence in emergency stroke treatment

The hospital has also applied artificial intelligence in the treatment of acute stroke and the assessment of cerebral infarction treatment to be able to provide emergency care to patients who unfortunately arrive late, up to 24 hours after the onset of the disease. In particular, with the strength of multidisciplinary coordination, many cases of stroke patients with complex pathologies are consulted by specialists, helping to improve the effectiveness of treatment and recovery for patients.

At the Stroke Unit, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, as soon as the patient is brought to the hospital, the stroke emergency procedure will be activated. The rehabilitation process will be built on the changes of the stroke patient immediately after the emergency. From there, methods to improve function appropriate to the physical condition will be proposed, helping the patient adapt quickly to changes in the body, and soon return to daily life.

Dr. Nguyen Ba Thang examines a stroke patient

Doctor Thang noted that there are still misconceptions in stroke emergency care such as: cupping, bloodletting, worshiping, taking oral medicine, transporting patients by motorbike, waiting for patients to recover... These are the reasons why patients do not receive proper emergency care, causing many unfortunate consequences.

"You should remember the signs and how to handle them with the sentence: "Distorted smile, slurred speech, limp arm - Call an ambulance, go now, don't wait", quickly take the patient to the hospital as soon as possible for emergency care and timely treatment", Dr. Thang emphasized.
