Recently, in Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong, two patients were found to have monkeypox. It is known that this disease can spread into an epidemic if drastic measures are not taken to prevent it.

Speaking to the press, Dr. Luong Chan Quang - Deputy Head of the Department of Disease Control and Prevention, Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City said that both cases of monkeypox were discovered and tested on the weekend.

As soon as a suspected monkeypox case was recorded on the afternoon of September 22, Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital investigated, consulted, and took samples to send to the Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City and had test results on the morning of September 23.

In the second case, the Binh Duong Provincial Center for Disease Control verified, investigated and took samples to send to the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City on the evening of September 23, and the test results were returned on the morning of September 24.

The investigation and verification of cases and contacts is carried out by the provincial/municipal Center for Disease Control after receiving information about a suspected case without waiting for test results.

The Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City, in its role as director and coordinator, has compiled and shared information between provinces/cities to promptly identify risk factors and initial close contacts in order to quickly respond to disease situations.

Currently, localities are continuing to investigate and expand locations and groups of people in contact with the two cases, following the principle of going door-to-door and checking each subject to determine the source of infection and early detection of other cases (if any).

Available information shows that both patients developed the disease at their place of residence, and had no history of contact with foreigners or recent travel abroad.

In the context of globalization, easy trade and tourism between countries, the risk of disease entering each country is completely possible. Therefore, to prevent the disease from spreading widely in the community, each person needs to raise awareness and comply with the instructions of the health sector, not only with monkeypox but also with other infectious diseases.

Dr. Luong Chan Quang also said that monkeypox is transmitted from person to person from the time the first symptoms appear. The disease is transmitted mainly through direct contact (including sexual intercourse) and through large droplets.

To proactively prevent monkeypox, people need to take the following measures for patients with symptoms of fever, acute pustular rash around the genitals, palms, feet, trunk, face, need to immediately contact a medical facility for timely monitoring and advice.

At the same time, proactively self-isolate and avoid sexual intercourse.

For people in contact with patients, try to avoid close contact with monkeypox patients, avoid direct contact with wounds, body fluids, droplets and objects and utensils contaminated with pathogens.

In case there is someone at home/workplace who is infected or suspected of being infected, it is necessary to notify the medical facility for timely advice and treatment, do not self-treat.

For people, including patients, it is necessary to regularly take personal preventive measures. Dr. Luong Chan Quang said that it is necessary to cover the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, preferably with a cloth or handkerchief or disposable tissue or sleeve to reduce the spread of respiratory secretions;

Wash your hands with soap and clean water or an antiseptic solution immediately after coughing or sneezing. Do not spit in public places.
