According to statistics from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, this year the city has more than 60 high schools reducing their admission scores for grade 10. Meanwhile, nearly 50 high schools increased or kept their admission scores for grade 10 the same as last year.
"Easy to breathe" with top schools
What is special about the 2024 grade 10 admission season in Ho Chi Minh City is that most of the top and second-ranked high schools have reduced their admission scores by 0.25 to 2 points. Particularly, at the Practicing High School - Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, the admission score for the first choice (this article only counts the first choice) increased to 23 points, compared to 22.5 points last year.
Regarding the benchmark score rankings, Nguyen Thuong Hien High School still holds the position of the school with the highest benchmark score in the city: 24.25, up from 25.5 last year. Next are Tran Phu High School, Nguyen Huu Huan High School, and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, all with a benchmark score of 23.25 points.
Practicing High School - Ho Chi Minh City University of Education and Gia Dinh High School have the same standard score of 23.
Mac Dinh Chi, Le Quy Don, Phu Nhuan, and Nguyen Huu Cau High Schools have the same benchmark score of 22.5. Bui Thi Xuan High School has a benchmark score of 22.25.
Regarding the reduction in benchmark scores, Mr. Do Quoc Lam, a math teacher specializing in 10th grade entrance exams in Ho Chi Minh City, said: "The official benchmark scores are as many people predicted. This year, the math exam was more difficult than previous years, and the number of candidates with high scores was lower than last year.
The questions show a clear distinction between good, excellent and excellent levels. Therefore, many top and second-ranked schools have reduced their admission scores, which is in line with reality."
Increase benchmark in suburbs
While many candidates in the inner city breathed a sigh of relief because the benchmark scores decreased, those in the suburban areas increased.
Most high schools in Hoc Mon, Cu Chi, Binh Chanh districts, Thu Duc city, the standard score increased from 0.5 to 2.5 points such as Ho Thi Bi, Pham Van Sang, Nguyen Van Cu, Tan Thong Hoi, Phu Hoa, Trung Lap, Trung Phu, An Nhon Tay, Quang Trung, Cu Chi, Da Phuoc, Le Minh Xuan, Phong Phu, Vinh Loc B, Tan Tuc, Binh Chanh, Binh Chieu, Dao Son Tay high schools...
Besides, many schools in the middle and lower ranks but in the inner city also increased their admission scores such as Phan Dang Luu, Thanh Da, Suong Nguyet Anh, Nguyen An Ninh, Luong The Vinh, Le Thi Hong Gam, Nguyen Trai, Tan Phong, Ngo Gia Tu, Ta Quang Buu, Vo Van Kiet high schools...
Explaining the above issue, an official from the Department of Education and Training said that the increase in benchmark scores at the above schools was due to the number of candidates taking the exam, the quality of education, and the 10th grade entrance exam.
Firstly, in terms of exam questions, all three subjects are basically stable. That is, average or average-good students can get 5-6 points per subject. This year's math exam is considered difficult by many people, but in fact, the questions at the level of recognition and understanding are the same as in previous years. Only the questions with high application value used to differentiate candidates are clearly shown. Thus, the scores of average-good candidates and below have not changed compared to last year.
The second reason is that many secondary schools in the suburbs are gradually improving the quality of education. At the same time, middle and lower-ranking high schools are also strongly innovating to attract students.
Many schools also organize 10th grade admission consultation sessions, inviting parents and 9th grade students to visit the school, and introducing in detail the school’s educational activities. Therefore, many candidates choose to attend schools near their homes instead of going to other districts.
This year, the benchmark scores at these schools increased slightly and are expected to increase further in the coming years if the schools continue to improve in a positive direction.
Need confirmation of admission to grade 10 from 4-12-7-2024
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, candidates admitted to public grade 10 schools will confirm their admission to grade 10 from July 4 to 12, 2024.
First, candidates will confirm their admission online at: https://ts10.hcm.edu.vn (go to "Look up admission results 10" and log in). If students do not confirm within the above time, it will be considered as refusing the right to be admitted.
From July 17 to 31, 2024, high schools will organize direct application reception for candidates who have confirmed online enrollment.
Why is the admission score to Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School low?
The biggest surprise in this year’s 10th grade admissions season is the benchmark score for Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School. The benchmark score for this school is only 20 points, lower than the benchmark score for Trung Vuong High School, also located in District 1.
According to an official from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the admission score for Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School is low for many reasons: parents are worried about whether the school will be able to enroll students in the 2024-2025 school year or not, the school is separated from Tran Dai Nghia Specialized School and they do not know how it will operate... Therefore, the number of candidates applying to this school is quite low, leading to low admission scores.
