(Dan Tri) - On the morning of January 27, snow no longer fell on Fansipan peak (Sa Pa, Lao Cai), but the landscape here was immersed in white.
Snow covered white
According to the latest information, on the morning of January 27, trees on the top of Fansipan in Lao Cai were covered in white snow. However, the snow has now stopped falling.
On the afternoon of January 26, it snowed in this area, and the outside temperature dropped sharply due to the impact of a cold air mass.
Shared images show that the ice and snow that fell yesterday afternoon have not yet melted, forming a thick layer on the steps, paths, peach blossoms and chrysanthemums decorating the peak of Fansipan for Tet. Many netizens expressed regret that they are on Tet holiday and do not have the opportunity to go to Sa Pa to see this interesting natural phenomenon.
Working at the Fansipan cable car tourist area, Mr. Quang Thien said that on the morning of January 27, the railings, stairs, trees, and roofs on the top of Fansipan were still covered in white. The temperature at its coldest, dropped to about -8 degrees Celsius then gradually increased to -3 degrees Celsius, the weather was gloomy.
"These days, people are returning to reunite with their families for Tet, so the number of tourists taking the cable car to the top of Fansipan is not large. Some tourists feel lucky, when they just stepped down from the cabin, they saw a strange phenomenon," Quang Thien shared with Dan Tri reporter.
According to Mr. Thien, when stepping outside, the staff working at the top of Fansipan can clearly feel the biting cold. If they do not wear gloves, their hands will quickly get frostbite and lose feeling after a minute.
Knowing that it was snowing in Sa Pa, many tourists called Thien to ask about the weather in the coming days. This year, most tourists chose to travel from the second day of Tet. It is not clear whether there will be snow or ice at that time.
With many years of experience working in the tourism industry, this young man believes that hands, feet and head are the three most important parts to protect when going to areas with snowfall.
"Guests should not wear too many layers of clothing, just 3 layers to keep the body warm: thermal shirt, sweater and thick outer jacket. Remember to cover your ears, wear a mask, especially keep your head, hands and feet warm because these parts can affect the nervous system," Mr. Thien advised.
On the afternoon of January 26, at the Rong May glass bridge area at an altitude of 2,000m in Tam Duong district (Lai Chau), snowfall was also recorded.
Mr. Chu Anh Tuan (an employee working at the Rong May glass bridge) said that the snow started falling at 4 p.m. and stopped after 2 hours. The surface of the glass bridge is covered with a thin white layer, quite slippery, and you have to hold on to the railing to move.
"It's been many years since snow has fallen on the Rong May glass bridge. It's close to Tet so there aren't many tourists. Snow has accumulated in a 5-6cm layer on the surface of the glass bridge. With the current low temperature, it's possible that snow will continue to fall," said Mr. Tuan.
Tourists regret
In the past, when it snowed, many tourists immediately booked cars and rooms to go to Sa Pa that night. At this time, most people are returning to their hometowns to prepare for the New Year of the Snake, so they almost miss the opportunity to see the snow.
Ms. Cam Nhung (living in Hanoi) had the chance to touch snow in Lao Cai twice in 2019 and 2022. Her family planned to go on a spring trip to Sa Pa on the 4th day of Tet. When she saw the snow falling early, this woman expressed regret.
"My family just spent Tet with my parents at home for a day and couldn't go to Sa Pa. The children wanted to see the snow, and the whole family was very sorry. We don't know if it will still snow at the beginning of the new year," Nhung said.
Returning home from Lao Cai City at noon on January 26, Ms. Nhu Quynh (living in O Quy Ho ward, Sa Pa town) felt a clear change in temperature.
Before that, the weather was warm and sunny, with temperatures around 11-12 degrees Celsius. After just one day, it became freezing cold, with light rain. Around 3 p.m., snow started to fall lightly, surprising Ms. Quynh.
"I drove to the top of O Quy Ho pass, the snow fell heavily in that area, covering the vegetable gardens and trees. The intensity was not as strong as in 2008 or 2013," said Ms. Quynh.
This natural phenomenon has delighted many people because it is strange. However, farmers who are neighbors of this woman expressed concern because the snowfall lasting for many hours could cause the chayote trellis to collapse, damaging the vegetable fields.
Earlier, on the morning of January 26, light snow fell in Mo Phang and Xin Phin Chu villages (Thuong Phung commune) and Lung Van Chai village (Xin Cai commune) of Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province. These areas are located at an altitude of over 1,500m.
Talking to Dan Tri reporter, Mr. Chao Lao Su (Deputy Commune Team Leader of Xin Cai Commune) said that the snow appeared at 8am, then stopped falling 2 hours later. The intensity of the snowfall was lighter compared to a few years ago.
"The temperature when it snows is about 3 degrees Celsius. Because the snow is light, it melts very quickly. For many years, Xin Cai commune has only had frost, no snow," Mr. Su added.
