Clip of women in Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province contributing gold to help each other build houses, develop family economy, and save by buying gold.
After each rice harvest, many women in Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province, discuss with their families to sell rice together and go shopping for 24k gold to bring to the gold pool to contribute capital, to help other women who need money to build houses or send their children to school.
The entire Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province currently has 570 members in gold-pooling groups. In the first 6 months of 2024 alone, the groups pooled 86 taels of gold to help 7 female group members build houses, produce, do business...
Each time they attend a meeting, members will bring from 2 to 4 taels of gold to contribute to their group's capital. From this amount of gold, support will be considered for members in the group who have legitimate needs to use it first. Photo: An An
Ms. Le Thi Gam, residing in Tran Hoi commune, Tran Van Thoi district, said that thanks to participating in a capital pooling group, she recently received support to build a spacious house worth nearly 700 million VND.
According to the group members, after each rice harvest, the women save up a few tens of millions to buy gold and contribute to the group's capital.
"Since joining the gold pool model, I have been helped by members of the group to build a house and have capital to pay for my children's education and buy more land," Ms. Le Thi Gam happily said.
The process of approving members into gold-pooling groups is also selective. Thanks to these regulations, although the gold-pooling model has been established and existed for more than 10 years, there has not been any case of complaint or of borrowing gold and not returning it. Photo: An An
In Tran Hoi commune alone, Tran Van Thoi district, there are 29 gold-pooling groups, each group has from 10 to 15 members. Every 6 months, the groups will meet once. Each time they attend a meeting, members will bring from 2 to 4 taels of gold to contribute to their group's capital.
Members who need to use capital for important purposes will be given priority to receive gold first. On average, each time they receive capital, they will receive from 4 to 6 taels of gold.
The capital is the gold received from the gold pool that the women spend on legitimate work. Some build houses, some buy land for their children to live separately and do business, and some save to raise their children to study. Photo: An An
Ms. Tran Kim Dao - President of the Women's Union of Tran Hoi Commune, Tran Van Thoi District said, we women realize that only with economic development can we maintain family happiness, so from there we spontaneously created this model of pooling gold to help each other.
According to Ms. Dao, when it was first established in 2011, Tran Hoi commune had 2 gold-pooling groups, but now this number has increased to nearly 30 groups, each group has its own regulations, some groups pool 2 taels, some groups pool 4 taels, in the form of drawing lots to receive capital.
Tran Van Thoi District is a freshwater area of Ca Mau Province, where people's livelihoods mainly depend on agricultural farming models. Therefore, the local government recognizes that the model of selling rice to buy gold to contribute to a capital pool is very good and meaningful, helping many families to have the conditions to improve their lives. Thanks to the regulations and careful selection of participants, the gold pooling model has existed for more than 10 years, but there has not been any case of complaint or borrowing gold and not returning it.
Also a group member who has just received nearly 4 taels of gold from the capital contribution group, Ms. Nguyen Thi Duom said she is very happy to have the conditions to buy several hectares of land for her children to live separately and make a living.
Ms. Duom said this was the third time she received gold from the gold pool. The first and second times Ms. Duom pooled capital to build a house.
"I used the gold I just received to buy a piece of land for my child. Previously, my family also joined a gold pool, thanks to which we were able to build a house worth 160 million in 2008," Ms. Duom said, adding that only by joining the gold pool could we accumulate capital to develop the family economy.
