According to people in Cai Su hamlet, Hoa Tan commune, Ca Mau city, Ca Mau province, blood cockles can withstand high salinity, suitable for square areas with water in and out.

In particular, the Hoa Tan area is near a large river mouth, so the amount of alluvium is abundant, which is the main food source for cockles. Blood cockles are less susceptible to disease and require less care, because the food comes naturally from the soil, so people here are very fond of raising them.

The application class to replicate the blood cockle farming model in Cai Su hamlet has given more strength to the local people to do business.

The class consists of 30 people, each student after learning the theory will have a field trip on the farm. There are 3 households invested in demonstration models for people to visit and learn.

Ms. Le Thi Thuy Linh, an officer of the Economic Department of Ca Mau City, Ca Mau Province (Head of the class applying and replicating the clam farming model in Cai Su Hamlet), said: “If the traditional way of learning in the past only taught theory, with this model, the lecturer guides both theory and practice, so people can easily access it. After the class, not only the students in the class practiced it, but many people in the neighborhood also followed suit.”

Harvesting cockles raised in a shrimp pond at the family of Mr. Son and Ms. Quyt, cockle farmers in Cai Su hamlet, Hoa Tan commune, Ca Mau city, Ca Mau province.

3 students of the class released 7 million VND worth of cockles and harvested, after deducting expenses, they still made a profit of over 30 million VND, after 7 months of pilot farming.

Each square is stocked with 72 kg of clam seeds (as this is a pilot model for expansion), normally people stock about 100-200 kg of clam seeds/ha.

“The survival rate of clams is over 50%; clams are only lost due to weather and the soil environment of each farm. Raising clams does not require feeding, and the price is stable. This is a suitable and sustainable livestock, even for households with little land and labor,” Ms. Thuy Linh shared.

Currently, in the hamlet, there are more than 50 households raising blood cockles. Everyone raises them, every family raises them, and the spirit of the people is very enthusiastic and excited about this type of farming because of its high economic value.

Mr. Nguyen Van Son's family raised more than 200 kg of cockles, after nearly 7 months of harvesting, earning a profit of nearly 40 million VND.

Mr. Son said: "Blood cockles can be raised long-term in shrimp ponds, without having to be harvested at the right time like shrimp, especially without the cost of food and care.

If the price of blood cockles drops, farmers can completely store them and wait for the price to increase to increase their income. I have been raising cockles for 6 years now, and have never failed a crop. The profit of each crop depends on the weather and the breed.

Each household raises at least 0.2 hectares, and at most over 0.6 hectares. Although the income from raising blood cockles is a sideline, it is still several tens of millions to hundreds of millions of VND per year. Ms. Ho Thi Quyt (Mr. Son's wife) said: "Shrimp and crab sometimes have good and bad times, but this cockle is always sure to have a harvest, and the price does not drop, causing the market to be flooded."

The model of raising blood cockles in shrimp ponds is bringing positive effects to the lives of people in Hoa Tan commune as well as some localities on the outskirts of Ca Mau city, creating motivation to develop large-scale economic models, bringing a fairly stable source of income to gradually eliminate the current shrimp monoculture.
