EAR DEFORMITY

According to doctors at the Central Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, the above cases are all caused by using non-sterile tools or improperly cleaned piercings, especially in cases where the ear cartilage piercing is difficult to heal, causing infection and many serious complications.

Patient with ear inflammation after piercing multiple ears

Recently, patient PTK (female, 18 years old, in Thach That district, Hanoi) was hospitalized with both ears swollen and painful with 4-5 piercing holes on each side, the right ear was more swollen and painful, and had pus. After examination, doctors diagnosed the patient with bilateral auricular cartilage inflammation, right auricular cartilage abscess. Doctors performed incisions to drain pus and clean the inflamed tissue.

Another case is patient D.MT (male, 23 years old, in Hoai Duc district, Hanoi) who was admitted to the hospital with pain, swelling, redness and heat in the right earlobe, with a pus hole. About 2 weeks before coming to the hospital, the patient had his right ear pierced. After about 4 days, the patient had a slight fever, swelling and pain in the right earlobe, so he went to another medical facility for examination and treatment, but the earlobe continued to be swollen, the pain was still there and there was pus.

At the hospital, the patient was diagnosed with a right ear cartilage abscess due to an ear piercing. Doctors performed surgery to drain the abscess, scrape off the necrotic cartilage, and then suture and fix the patient with a bandage soaked in antibiotic grease. The patient's right ear is now stable, with no more pus; however, it shows signs of more deformity and shrinkage than the healthy side.

TREATMENT IS VERY COMPLICATED

According to Dr. Pham Anh Tuan, who directly treats patients, the most common complication after ear piercing is auricular cartilage inflammation. This is a dangerous complication for young people who like to pierce their ears because when piercing the cartilage layer of the ear, the earring is more likely to become infected and is more difficult to treat than infections in soft tissues such as the earlobe. In addition, the risk of contracting blood-borne diseases (hepatitis B, HIV, etc.) can also occur when ear piercing tools are not handled properly.

Dr. Tuan also noted that treating cartilage inflammation and auricular abscess is very complicated because bacteria causing cartilage inflammation require long-term use of antibiotics. In addition, the removal of necrotic cartilage can easily leave sequelae. In some cases, if they do not go to the hospital in time, the auricular cartilage has been partially destroyed; after treatment, the inflammation completely improves but leaves serious sequelae such as deformed, wrinkled, and contracted auricles, requiring surgery to reconstruct the auricle.

Doctor Tuan recommends that when people need to have their ears pierced, they should choose a reputable, licensed facility and learn carefully about how to care for and maintain hygiene after the procedure. Care should be taken when piercing ears in multiple locations, especially where the piercing passes through the cartilage of the ear, as it can easily cause cartilage inflammation and complications due to cartilage inflammation.

When there are unusual symptoms such as long-term swelling or pus at the piercing site, you should immediately go to a specialized medical facility for examination and timely treatment to avoid long-term unfortunate consequences.
