On February 18, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis is suffering from pneumonia in both lungs, complicating the treatment of the 88-year-old religious leader and indicating that his health is deteriorating.
According to Reuters, Pope Francis has suffered from a respiratory infection for more than a week and was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on February 14.
In a statement, the Holy See said the Pope had a chest X-ray at noon on February 18. The results showed that both lungs were inflamed and required further treatment with medication.
"Tests, chest X-rays and the clinical condition of the Holy Father continue to reveal a complex condition," the Vatican said.
The Holy See reiterated that the pope was suffering from a "polymicrobial infection", a condition that required treatment with anti-inflammatory corticosteroids and antibiotics, making "treatment more difficult".
However, the Vatican also reassured that the leader of the global Catholic Church "is in good spirits".
In a statement about the Pope's health, the Vatican also added that all public activities in the Pope's schedule have been canceled until Sunday (February 23).
Pope Francis has had a number of health issues in recent years, including bouts of flu, sciatica and abdominal hernia surgery in 2023.
He also had pneumonia many years ago and had to have part of his lung removed, making his hospitalization for pneumonia this time cause for concern.
