15 years of making dreams come true

In 2000, on a ferry crossing the Hau River, Mr. Nguyen Huu Khanh (at that time Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee) stood and talked with a farmer and his son on the same ferry. He accidentally heard the father's confession: "I took my son to take the university entrance exam, but I hope he doesn't pass, because the family doesn't have enough money to take care of him."

Vice Chairwoman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thi Minh Thuy and Mr. Nguyen Huu Khanh, Chairman of the Management Board of An Giang Talent Support Fund, presented awards to students.

From a humane idea…

The father's confession made Mr. Nguyen Huu Khanh ponder throughout his business trip. According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Khanh, this is a fairly common situation in the Mekong Delta, a land with advantages in agriculture, but "low" in education. After retiring (in 2010), he officially started to mobilize and establish the An Giang Talent Support Fund. "The purpose of the fund is to train human resources and develop talents for the province. To honor and support students with excellent academic achievements and outstanding individuals in the socio-economic fields. To award and sponsor to encourage the spirit of learning and research of students. To encourage individuals who have made positive contributions to society... What is special is that the fund operates with a non-profit purpose, aiming at the common interests of the community..." - Mr. Nguyen Huu Khanh shared.

When it was first established, the fund received voluntary contributions from 40 organizations and individuals, with a total amount of 4.1 billion VND. By February 2025, the fund had received over 290 contributions, with a total capital of over 14.5 billion VND. Over the past 15 years, the fund has supported 2,150 outstanding students and individuals who have made many contributions in various areas of social life, including principals, lecturers, excellent teachers, coaches, artists, soldiers, farmers, craftsmen, mechanics, etc., with a total amount of nearly 12 billion VND.

“The fund not only gives us scholarships, but is also a source of spiritual encouragement, helping us confidently overcome challenges and difficulties, and pursue our education…” - Huynh Ngoc Thien Kim (a student who received a scholarship and returned to contribute to the fund) shared. The fund’s 15-year milestone: The number of students receiving support is 2,150. The original capital has grown from 4.1 billion VND (2010) to 14.5 billion VND (2025). This amount does not include the bank interest accumulated and awarded over the past 15 years.

… To the “sweet fruits” of life

With 15 years of accompanying and supporting talents in the province, the fund has helped over 10 PhDs, hundreds of masters, doctors, engineers, and teachers realize their ambitions and dreams, conquering the path of knowledge. Among the above talents, they have used their acquired knowledge to serve the Fatherland, serve the People, and participate in teaching at Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, Ho Chi Minh City University of Information Technology, Van Lang University, Ton Duc Thang University, Ho Chi Minh City Open University. Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, An Giang University... There are over 100 doctors and pharmacists working at Thong Nhat Hospital, Cho Ray Hospital, Children's Hospital, An Giang General Hospital, AG Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital... Hundreds of bachelors, engineers, teachers are working in and outside the province, especially Vo Lap Phuc (Phu Tan district), honored as a typical citizen of Ho Chi Minh City in 2024.

“The valuable thing is that many university graduates, although they do not have a stable income, enthusiastically return to contribute to build the fund. Up to now, 55 beneficiaries have returned to contribute, with a total amount of 153.5 million VND,” Mr. Nguyen Huu Khanh informed. Looking back over the 15-year journey, the An Giang Talent Support Fund has affirmed its role and importance in the province’s education career, contributing to training human resources for the province, gradually linking training with the use of human resources. Mr. Le Van Khanh, Executive Director of the Talent Support Fund, said that in the coming time, the fund will continue to expand its scale, seek more funding from charitable organizations and individuals to help more students...

“Practice has proven that over the past 15 years, the fund has not operated like an education promotion organization or other forms of charity. The fund’s role is to invest in people to contribute to training high-quality human resources for the homeland and the country…” - Mr. Nguyen Huu Khanh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the An Giang Talent Support Fund affirmed.
