Ho Chi Minh City leaders awarded a certificate that the art of Lion Dance in the City has been included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage to a representative of the Lion Dance Federation.
Long associated with the Chinese community in Ho Chi Minh City, the art of Lion Dance not only has cultural value, but also demonstrates the spirit of solidarity and community cohesion. The recognition of heritage contributes to preserving and promoting traditional beauty in the diverse cultural life of the city.
According to information from the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, there are 63 Lion Dance troupes operating on different scales, large and small. Although Lion Dance has a history of hundreds of years of formation and development on a large scale, it was not until recent years that an official organization representing this art form was established. In 2021, the Ho Chi Minh City Lion Dance Federation was born.
Mr. Lu Chan Loi, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Lion Dance Federation, said that since its establishment, the Federation has been a gathering place for lion dance troupes in the Chinese community. In order to introduce and preserve this art form, the Federation has also conducted research and surveys to document the history, origin, performance skills, costumes, props and cultural elements related to the Lion Dance, as well as record, take photos and archive related documents.
Mr. Lu Chan Loi hopes that in the coming time, the Federation will always receive the companionship and support from Ho Chi Minh City to effectively promote the Lion Dance, so that this sport can develop into an indispensable spiritual food for the public.
The art performance combined with the Lion and Dragon dance opened the ceremony.
Sharing at the ceremony, Mr. Luong Tan Hang, Head of Hang Anh Duong Group, said that this is a source of pride not only for those who perform Lion Dance but also for the whole community. This recognition helps the younger generation to be aware of preserving and promoting this art form; at the same time, affirms the value of those who have been attached to Lion Dance from the past to the present.
Hang Anh Duong is a Lion Dance troupe that has performed and competed in countries such as Japan, China, Malaysia, the Philippines... In particular, since 2015, the troupe has grown strongly nationwide, contributing to bringing Vietnamese Lion Dance art to the same level as international friends.
Up to now, Ho Chi Minh City has 4 national intangible cultural heritages: Nghinh Ong Festival - Can Gio, Nguyen Tieu Festival of Chinese people in District 5, Khai Ha - Cau An Festival at Lang Duc Ta Quan Le Van Duyet and Lion and Dragon Art of Chinese people in Ho Chi Minh City.
Ho Chi Minh City leaders awarded certificates of ranking of historical and cultural relics ranked at the City level to units.
At the ceremony, Ho Chi Minh City announced 7 more historical and cultural relics ranked at the city level. Of which, 3 historical relics are communal houses in Thu Duc city, such as: An Khanh communal house, Long Binh communal house and Long Hoa communal house. These relics not only have the typical architectural style of Southern communal houses, but are also places associated with the process of national liberation and unification.
Four architectural and artistic relics represent the cultural exchange between Vietnam and India, between Eastern and Western architecture. The historical and cultural values in the above works represent the level of development in the past, and are still valuable today: Tan Dinh Market, Mariamman Temple, Trung Vuong High School (District 1); Saigon University (District 5).
According to Mr. Nguyen Minh Nhut, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, the relics awarded the rank of City-level relics have increased the number of historical and cultural relics of the city to 200 works and locations. These are relics of important significance in preserving historical and traditional values, helping the younger generation better understand the process of struggle, construction and development of Ho Chi Minh City; contributing to arousing national pride, patriotism and responsibility of each citizen in the process of building and developing the city to become increasingly rich, beautiful and civilized.
