Dong Nai province has high expectations for the idea of Long Thanh airport urban area competition from domestic and international units.
On November 13, Dong Nai Department of Construction announced the results of the first round of the competition for the general urban planning ideas of Long Thanh airport and surrounding areas. Eleven units passed the first round to continue to the second round of the competition.

Mr. Ho Van Ha, Director of the Department of Construction, said that 11 units passed the first round of the competition, including both domestic and international units. According to the initial plan, the organizing committee only selected 5 units to enter the second round of the competition. However, in order to select the best ideas to supplement the Long Thanh urban master plan, the organizing committee decided to increase the number of units participating in the second round of the competition.
According to the leader of this department, in the planning of Dong Nai province, Long Thanh airport and Dong Nai river are identified as two competitive advantages for the development of the province. Therefore, the province also hopes to receive good and breakthrough planning ideas for the general urban planning project of Long Thanh airport and surrounding areas.
Long Thanh airport urban area is expected to be planned according to a satellite model in which infrastructure, land use structure and economy are concentrated on the airport, taking full advantage of the airport as a driving force for economic growth, a new driving force for breakthrough development of the province.
Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee organized an international competition "Ideas for the master planning of Long Thanh airport and surrounding areas" to find unique ideas, optimal and most feasible development planning options, suitable for the conditions and orientation of forming an airport city.
The area focused on researching the general urban planning idea of Long Thanh airport and surrounding areas has boundaries in three districts: Long Thanh, Thong Nhat, and Cam My with an area of over 57,000 hectares.
In particular, the general urban planning area of Long Thanh airport includes the entire administrative boundary of Long Thanh district with 14 administrative units (13 communes and 1 town) with an area of over 43,000 hectares. The expanded surrounding area has an area of over 14,000 hectares including the administrative boundary of Highway 25 commune, Thong Nhat district and Xuan Que, Song Nhan, Thua Duc communes of Cam My district.
Long Thanh Airport has taken shape and is expected to be operational on August 30, 2026.
Also on October 13, Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee held a thematic conference on construction planning, urban planning and urban development after the provincial planning was approved.
According to Mr. Ho Van Ha, the provincial planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, by 2030, Dong Nai province will have 19 urban areas, including 1 type I urban area, 2 type II urban areas, 1 type III urban area, 7 type IV urban areas and 8 type V urban areas. By 2045, the province will have 26 urban areas, including 3 type I urban areas, 1 type II urban area, 1 type III urban area, 7 type IV urban areas and 14 type V urban areas.
With the work of construction planning and urban planning, the Provincial People's Committee requires relevant units to change their thinking and awareness, creating a breakthrough in planning work. Planning must have a long-term vision, be synchronous, promote values, form modern, green urban and residential areas, with highlights, unique features, differences and aim for sustainable development.
Regarding progress, the general urban planning of Bien Hoa, Nhon Trach, and Trang Bom urban areas must be submitted to the Ministry of Construction for appraisal in December 2024. Particularly, Long Thanh urban area will have the results of the selection exam in December 2024 and will deploy the preparation of planning documents to submit to the Ministry of Construction for appraisal in June 2025.
For zoning plans in urban areas, Long Khanh urban area must be approved before June 2025. Bien Hoa and Nhon Trach urban areas must be approved before December 2025; Long Thanh urban area must be approved before June 2026.
