Sudan has been in civil war for nearly nine months, with army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan facing off against his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, head of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has claimed 12,000 lives, according to estimates from the ACLED analysis group. Meanwhile, the United Nations says more than 7 million people have been displaced by the civil war.
In the latest fighting, the Southern Khartoum Resistance Committee claimed that "10 civilians were killed by shelling in residential areas and local markets".
The committee is one of several groups that have organized pro-democracy protests and are now providing aid in the civil war. Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have so far failed.
In early January, Mr. Daglo visited several African countries, marking his first foreign trip since the conflict began. In the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, he signed a declaration with former Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, implying that RSF was an important interlocutor.
Before the war, the leaders of the two sides joined forces to overthrow Sudan's civilian rulers in October 2021, ending two years of democratic transition.
