On March 20, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said the agency believes that for peace negotiations on Ukraine to be successful, more parties should be involved in the negotiation process.
Speaking at a press conference at the United Nations headquarters, when asked whether European countries should join the peace talks now or at a later stage, Mr Haq said: "I think the important point is that for the peace talks to be successful, the framework of the negotiations should be expanded."
On the same day, European leaders and military officials from the region also held separate meetings to discuss a long-term plan to bring peace to Ukraine.
The move comes as the US and Russia prepare to hold a new round of talks next week on a deal to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Earlier on March 19, US President Donald Trump had a phone call lasting about an hour with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a day after a similar discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In a social media post, President Trump said the call was aimed at “adjusting to the needs and demands of both Russia and Ukraine” as he sought to push for a ceasefire between the two countries.
In February, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution calling for a swift end to the conflict and urging the establishment of lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.
