According to the Industry and Trade Information Center, the State Administration for Market Regulation (China Standardization Administration) has issued the mandatory national standard GB 18584-2024 on "Limitations of Harmful Substances in Furniture", effective from July 2025, applicable to all wooden furniture products.

This standard specifies limits for harmful substances such as formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, xylene, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), migrating harmful elements, phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, degradable aromatic amine dyes, radionuclides, dimethyl fumarate, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in various types of furniture, together with criteria for test results.

With the new standards, Vietnamese businesses need to pay attention to updating to maintain the export of wood and wood products to this market. Compliance becomes even more important, especially since China is currently one of the important markets of the Vietnamese wood industry.

According to statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in the first 8 months of 2024, China was the second largest export market for wood and wood products of our country, after the United States, with a turnover of 1.2 billion USD, accounting for 13.5% of total export turnover.

For furniture products (HS code 94), this is also the 20th largest import market in the world. In the first 7 months of 2024, furniture imports (HS code 94) into the Chinese market reached 1.2 billion USD. Of which, China imported the most from the Italian market with 310 million USD, imported from the Federal Republic of Germany 24, reaching 180 million USD.

Vietnam was the 6th largest furniture supplier to China in 7 months, reaching 46.8 million USD, mainly wooden furniture.

ITC statistics show that many types of wooden furniture from Vietnam account for a fairly high proportion of China's total imports. The proportion of wooden frame chairs imported from Vietnam - excluding upholstered chairs (HS code 940169) from China accounts for 45 - 50%. Currently, Vietnam is the third largest supplier of wooden furniture to China after Italy and Germany.

Therefore, businesses need to pay attention to updating changes in standards for Chinese furniture products to be proactive in production and export activities, and not exceed the limit of harmful substances according to the permitted standards.
