On September 27, Tay Ho District Police (Hanoi) said that by creating a fake fanpage impersonating the UPU international letter writing competition, the scammer posted information about the fake competition and promised attractive prizes. This behavior was intended to lure students and parents to register, thereby stealing personal information and assets.
The UPU International Letter Writing Competition, organized by the Universal Postal Union since 1971, is a useful playground for students from 9 to 15 years old, helping to develop writing skills and creative thinking.
In Vietnam, the competition has become a prestigious activity, attracting more than 1.5 million students to participate each year. The 2024 competition officially ended with the theme: “Write a letter to future generations to tell them about the world you hope they will inherit.”
However, recently, many fake UPU contest fan pages have appeared on Facebook. These pages post false information, luring students and parents to participate in fake contests in order to defraud and steal personal information and assets.
Accordingly, the police recommend that parents be vigilant against Fanpages impersonating the UPU International Letter Writing Competition to commit fraud.
In addition, Tay Ho District Police recommend that parents and students need to be vigilant and follow the "3 no" principle: Do not follow requests from unofficial fanpages or websites.
Do not provide personal or bank account information. Do not follow strange links or make any payments without verifying the source.
People need to be cautious when receiving information from Facebook pages about online contests or programs, and must clearly verify the identity of the organizer before participating.
In case of being scammed, people need to immediately report to the nearest police station for support and resolution.
