Publishing the novel "Darkness and the Sun" by writer Duong Huong

The novel tells the story of Nguyet Ha village, a village with a rich culture and history. The setting spans from land reform, war to the opening period, revolving around the lives of the characters Ngo Quat, Hoang Do, the family of old Kinh (including Ca Lanh, Mat, Buc) and Hanh, a beautiful, gentle girl with a famous cheo singing voice in the area.

Ngo Quat has a stooped body, with legs longer than his back. If he "didn't become a cultural officer, he would probably be single for the rest of his life." As a cultural officer in Nguyet Ha village, Ngo Quat caused deep hatred with the "Gau Casino" initiative. The hatred between Mr. Kinh's family and Mrs. Nghia's family - Thu Nga's mother - led to the tragedy between Hoang Do, Buc and Thu Nga. Hoang Do and Thu Nga loved each other, but Mr. Kinh played a trick on them by using money to buy back their engagement ring - a strict, long-standing custom of Nguyet Ha village.

It was also Ngo Quat who, in the name of cultural reform, destroyed the communal house and the peace of Nguyet Ha village. Then there was the ban on people playing the flute and kite, the changing of the village name... The love triangle between Hoang Do, Buc and Thu Nga is a haunting, regretful thing in the novel.

“Darkness and the Sun” also realistically depicts the vulgar, dissolute lifestyle of people who are blinded by status and fame and lose themselves in the open-door era. Besides, it is the life of soldiers returning from war...

Duong Huong is one of the writers who made important contributions to modern Vietnamese literature after 1975. He was born in 1949 in Thai Binh and currently lives and works in Quang Ninh. He won the Army Literature Magazine Short Story Award (1990); the Vietnam Writers Association Award (1991) and was awarded the State Prize for Literature and Arts in 2017.

His most notable work is “Ben khong chong”. In 2000, the work was adapted into a film of the same name by director Luu Trong Ninh, winning the Silver Lotus Award at the 13th Vietnam Film Festival. The work was also translated into French and Italian. In 2017, “Ben khong chong” was adapted into the film “Thuong nho o ai” by directors Luu Trong Ninh and Bui Tho Thinh, winning the Golden Kite Award from the Vietnam Cinema Association.

The novel “Ben Khong Chong” was also adapted into a play of the same name by the Vietnam Drama Theater and the Korean Association of Program Producers (KAPAP), performed in Vietnam and Korea.
