At the conference, leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment briefly reported on the Irrigation Planning for the Red River - Thai Binh River Basin for the period 2022-2030, with a vision to 2050, and the Irrigation Planning for the Mekong River Basin for the period 2022-2030, with a vision to 2050.
Accordingly, the Plans aim to exploit, comprehensively use and sustainably develop water resources in the Red - Thai Binh River basin and the Mekong River basin, taking into account the impact of climate change , upstream development, serving multiple purposes; proactively draining water for agriculture combined with drainage for urban areas, industry, etc. in the irrigation system.
At the same time, prevent and combat floods, landslides, subsidence and saltwater intrusion for the river basin; improve the water environment to meet the requirements of socio-economic development, contributing to ensuring water security of the two basins until 2030 with a vision to 2050; serve as a basis for developing annual, 5-year and long-term irrigation development plans for the two basins.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha emphasized that the planning of irrigation in the Mekong and Red River basins must ensure multi-purposes, solving both short-term and long-term problems to avoid waste. In addition, irrigation projects must ensure synchronization, continuity and unity.
The Deputy Prime Minister requested that the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and scientists take note of the opinions and recommendations of ministries, branches and localities and study and complete the Planning in a systematic and scientific manner.
In particular, priority should be given to the construction of urgent projects to address flooding caused by high tides, prevent saltwater intrusion, provide fresh water for production and people's lives, etc.
