After two screenings for the media and film industry in Ho Chi Minh City, Tunnels: Sun in the Dark by director Bui Thac Chuyen received praise from those in the profession for the dedication and sacrifice of the entire crew.

Media representatives said that the budget for The Tunnels was very high, up to tens of billions of VND, possibly exceeding most Vietnamese films ever produced. Because the film had many investors, the official budget needed to be recalculated before being announced.

Historical films excite the cinema world

Director of the Department of Cinema Dang Tran Cuong wrote on his personal page: "It is an honor to attend the special screening of the film Tunnels - an emotional and meaningful work that director Bui Thac Chuyen has cherished for more than 10 years, along with the producer's desire to show gratitude to the previous generation.

The film not only recreates a part of the nation's painful but heroic history, but also conveys strong messages about patriotism, sacrifice, desire for peace and the humanistic beauty of the Vietnamese people."

The Director said this is a proud work of Vietnamese cinema, hoping the film will touch the hearts of many generations of Vietnamese audiences.

Director Phan Gia Nhat Linh said it had been a long time since he had seen such a "good" Vietnamese film. "Magnificent. Touching. And makes me proud of the country's history. Khoai Uncle Sau and his beautiful moments are probably the most touching scenes of the film for me" - he wrote.

Director Nguyen Huu Tuan has a long post. He hopes the film will earn several hundred billion VND, because "it is human nature to enjoy beauty to enrich the soul". He also wants to nominate the film to represent Vietnam in the preliminary round of the Best International Feature Film Oscar next year.

Nguyen Huu Tuan wrote: "The Tunnels is for Vietnamese people to watch, to watch and tremble with emotion. The film has the backbone of a strong dramatic situation, revolving around a few very impressive central faces, but is slice-of-life and can be said to have no main character.

There are only human portraits of the war, and therefore the way they lived and fought in the tunnels is the main character, has personality, has soul. War is cruel, extremely stressful, even if it is just killing in the small underground space. But the life of the tunnels is still love, forgiveness, protection and also... watching movies.

They fought as if it were our daily livelihood in peacetime, that is why the tunnel guerrillas won more than once. Over decades, they were the ultimate victors against the enemies with "big ships, big guns, very good at fighting".

Let's broadcast internationally so that countries know about the patriotism of the Vietnamese people.

Director Charlie Nguyen commented: "It's been a long time since I've had such a great cinematic experience. It deserves to be released worldwide, not just domestically."

Similarly, critic Le Hong Lam said that The Tunnels deserved an international premiere at a major international film festival.

Le Hong Lam remembers the two lines of the character Uncle Sau (played by Meritorious Artist Cao Minh) the most: "We must let them know how dangerous the tunnels are" and "the tunnels are people's war, you can never win."

He commented that the scenes of guerrillas fighting or attacking American soldiers in the film were very impressive and scary because of their "raw" quality. "Raw" could also be the most accurate adjective to describe the guerrilla warfare of Vietnamese soldiers in the tunnels. And the love scene under the bombs of war was "very raw but still very poetic".

"The cast in the film really put in their best efforts and although there was no outstanding role, there was no obscure character either. Singer Cao Minh did not appear much but had many impressive scenes. Thai Hoa, Quang Tuan and Ho Thu Anh also had moments to shine on screen because of their dedication to their roles" - Le Hong Lam wrote.

Director Ly Minh Thang compared: "The tunnel guerrillas were all ordinary people - in adversity they became extraordinary.

Even in a dangerous direct confrontation scene, I still saw a small girl who was a hundred times stronger than a tall, battle-hardened Western soldier. The film's plot was very suspenseful, dramatic, with many emotional and proud scenes!"

Actor Hua Minh Dat congratulated his colleague, actor Quang Tuan (playing Tu Dap) and wrote: "Congratulations to director Bui Thac Chuyen and the entire cast and crew because they have worked so hard."

Hua Minh Dat believes that this is a movie that when watched, people will feel suffocation, tension, and high concentration, like soldiers in a tunnel, life and death are as quick as a turn of the tunnel.

"Unlike other movies that create superheroes, this movie creates real heroes, and these soldiers are still living witnesses. Not heroic or grandiose, but it is an indispensable link for the victory of our people" - the actor wrote.
