At the FIFA Council meeting on October 4, FIFA announced that it plans to host the 2030 World Cup in six countries. However, the distribution of venues is slightly different. Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay are expected to host the three opening matches to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the tournament. Meanwhile, Morocco, Spain and Portugal will be the main hosts, hosting the remaining matches.
For the decision to be officially approved, FIFA must hold a vote with the participation of its 211 member football associations. This event could take place before the official congress next year in Bangkok.
The 2030 World Cup is expected to be held in 6 countries, on 3 continents.
" The FIFA Council, representing the entire world of football, has agreed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the FIFA World Cup in the most appropriate way. The tournament was first held in Uruguay in 1930.
A celebration will take place in three South American countries: Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. Each country will host a match. The first of the three matches will take place at the legendary Centenario Stadium in Montevideo (Uruguay) ," Infantino shared.
The confederation of Morocco, Spain and Portugal is the only candidate in the race to host the 2030 World Cup. So, if nothing changes, these are the 3 main countries that will host most of the matches of the 2030 World Cup.
King Mohammed VI of Morocco welcomed FIFA's decision. " His Majesty King Mohammed VI is pleased to inform his people that the FIFA Council has unanimously selected Morocco, Spain and Portugal as the sole candidates to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup," the Royal Office of Morocco said in a statement .
FIFA has also pledged to prioritize hosting the 2034 World Cup in Asia or Oceania. Saudi Arabia and Australia are likely to be interested in hosting the tournament.
