"After investigation, including confirmation of laboratory results, we have determined that the five cases reported in Moscow and the Moscow region are pneumonia caused by mycoplasma infection. This is not a new virus, so the increase in cases is unlikely to pose an epidemiological risk," said Batyr Berdyklychev, head of the WHO office in Russia.
According to Mr. Berdyklychev, WHO has effectively cooperated with the country's Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare Supervision Service ( Rospotrebnadzor ), affirming that the country has built a reliable epidemiological surveillance system.
Earlier, information spread in Russia that an unknown virus had appeared in the country, with symptoms including coughing up blood and high fever. However, tests for COVID-19 and acute respiratory infections were all negative.
