Storm Surrounded
No year has the agricultural sector faced as many difficulties and challenges as in 2024. In the first months of the year, the weather was complicated. Droughts and storms occurred continuously, significantly affecting agricultural production. The peak of the flood was in the circulation of storm No. 3 in early September. According to a report from the Provincial Office of Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue, the historic flood in September 2024 caused more than 6,200 hectares of rice and crops to fall and be flooded; nearly 3,000 hectares of annual and perennial crops and fruit trees were affected; nearly 50,000 cattle, poultry and other livestock were killed and swept away; nearly 1,000 hectares of planted forests were broken; 499 hectares of fish farming area and 527 fish cages were broken...
Leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development visited the new rice variety testing model.
Comrade Nguyen Dai Thanh, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: According to calculations, the unprecedented flood in the past many years has caused damage of 10% of the economic value of the industry.
Along with the fickle weather, the agricultural sector also has to face “storms” from the world market and problems from domestic production. The high prices of production materials and animal feed, while the selling price of products has decreased, have significantly affected the production and supply chain in industries such as livestock, farming, aquaculture, etc.
Weathering the storm
If natural storms, market storms and fierce competitive pressure mark an extremely difficult year for the agricultural sector and farmers, the achievements in 2024 mark a year of overcoming the "storm".
Under the leadership and direction of the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial People's Committee, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has implemented synchronous solutions. The focus is on restructuring the agricultural sector towards developing agricultural, forestry and fishery products, focusing on key products and specialties according to the linked chain to ensure quality and high added value associated with new rural construction; creating conditions to attract more businesses and cooperatives to invest in agriculture and rural areas; promoting production, especially two large product groups: food and foodstuffs, to meet the daily needs, consumption of people and exports. By the end of 2024, the agricultural sector exceeded the assigned targets, creating impressive numbers: Sugarcane output exceeded 21%; fresh milk output exceeded 19%; forest planting area exceeded 10.5%; tea output exceeded 1.8%; fresh meat output increased by 6%... The estimated annual production value of the sector reached over 4.6%. In addition to traditional export products such as tea and planted forest wood, for the first time, with great efforts from the industry and the subjects, 7 OCOP products of the province have "got tickets" to be officially exported to the European market.
Another bright spot for the agricultural sector in 2024 is that for the first time, Tuyen Quang's planted forests have been officially granted a raw material forest growing area code by the Vietnam Forestry Science Institute for Tuyen Quang forests. This is a huge step that not only increases the value of planted forests for export but also contributes to the goal of building Tuyen Quang into a center for processing planted forests in the country.
The above achievements show that the development of the agricultural sector is not only shaped by quantitative numbers but also shows qualitative changes.
Comrade Nguyen Dai Thanh, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confidently affirmed: The above achievements have brought new vitality to help the industry have more impetus to achieve the goals in the next phase while consolidating the industry's supporting position with other economic sectors.
