46 years after the battle to protect the northern border, Dong Dang town, Cao Loc district, Lang Son province - the borderland of the Fatherland has "revived", more bustling and bustling than before.
After normalizing relations in 1991, the Vietnam-China cooperative and friendly relationship has developed extensively in many fields, contributing to promoting vibrant trade activities between Dong Dang of Lang Son (Vietnam) and Pingxiang, Guangxi (China), creating jobs and increasing income for people on both sides.
Historical evidence
Dong Dang is a border town with 3,916 km of border adjacent to Pingxiang (Guangxi, China); has Dong Dang International Station and Huu Nghi International Border Gate; natural area of over 459 hectares, divided into 7 neighborhoods.
Dong Dang holds a strategic position in politics, economy, defense and security of Lang Son province and the whole country.
According to historical documents recorded in the history book of Dong Dang Town Party Committee, this place was one of the locations where the border war in the North began on February 17, 1979. The war caused heavy damage to Dong Dang Town in particular and the Northern border area in general.
Currently, at Dong Dang Fortress, located at height 339, Day Thep area, Dong Dang town, Cao Loc district, there are still clear historical evidences of the fight to protect the northern border of the army and people of the town in particular, and Lang Son province in general. Here, the army and people of Lang Son ethnic groups fought bravely and sacrificed to maintain this important position.
Nearly half a century has passed, but the vestiges of the 1979 war at Dong Dang fortress are still almost intact. Many of our soldiers and civilians will forever remain here. The fortress has become an epic, symbolizing the indomitable and heroic spirit of the army and people of Lang Son in the war against the invaders.
Now, among the large, collapsed concrete blocks, many flowers have bloomed, giving off a sweet fragrance. The green grass on the paths leading up to the fortress seems to somehow ease the pain of those whose loved ones are still here...
Ms. Vy Thi Bich Ky (born in 1964), whose house is about 100 meters from Dong Dang fortress, shared: "I joined the Dong Dang fortress protection management team with the desire to contribute to preserving this national historical relic; to commemorate the heroic martyrs and the people of Dong Dang who bravely fought and sacrificed here."
Attractive tourist destination
Around 1989, 10 years after the war, with the investment and attention of the Central, local and people, Dong Dang town was gradually rebuilt, and people returned home. Infrastructure was gradually invested, built, completed and developed, becoming an attractive destination for tourists from near and far.
Coming to the border town today, one can clearly feel the changes on the roads and neighborhoods. Looking down from Dong Dang fortress, this small town is like a beautiful landscape painting.
High-rise buildings in the neighborhoods, on the hillsides are interspersed with peach trees blooming in the spring. The streets are bright red with flags and flowers. Restaurants, eateries, entertainment and shopping spots are springing up more and more. Markets and shopping centers sell day and night, creating a bustling, bustling atmosphere, attracting tourists from near and far...
Chairman of Dong Dang Town People's Committee Sai Vinh Chung informed that with its favorable location as a border town, there are key traffic routes such as: Hanoi - Lang Son railway, National Highways 1A, 1B, 4A running through, currently, there are 3 important key projects passing through the area: Huu Nghi - Chi Lang Border Gate Expressway Project, expected to be open in 2025; Project to expand specialized freight transport route at milestones 1119-1120 Huu Nghi International Border Gate and Project to renovate Dong Dang International Railway Station.
These projects, when completed and put into operation, will open up development opportunities and breakthroughs for the locality, especially in the trading of goods, service development and commerce.
Along with that, Dong Dang town also has the potential to develop border tourism, border gate sightseeing; spiritual tourism, historical and cultural tourism with Dong Dang Mau Temple, Dong Dang Fortress... famous throughout the country and located in the itinerary and destination of Lang Son Geopark tourist route...
Thanks to the mobilization of resources from the Central and the province; effectively exploiting potentials and strengths, Dong Dang town has accelerated its strong economic, socio-cultural development, and maintained its national defense and security. Trade, service and tourism activities have developed.
In 2024, the state budget revenue will reach more than 1 billion VND, equal to 130% of the plan. It is estimated that more than 70,000 domestic and international tourists will visit Dong Dang. The average income per capita is about 50-55 million VND/person/year.
Entering a new era of development of the country, the town continues to exploit its potential and advantages to develop trade, services and tourism; attract more businesses operating in the fields of industry, trade, import and export, processing, logistics... Trade and services account for 90 - 91% of the economic structure in 2025.
The locality coordinates with relevant units to build and form destinations and tourist routes connecting historical and cultural relics and scenic spots of Dong Dang with other localities of the province to increase employment and income, improve people's lives; build Dong Dang into an attractive destination for tourists.
