The case of a relative looking to buy a used motorbike for about 20 million VND for a new student who had just enrolled in school in Ho Chi Minh City attracted many opinions on an education forum.
With this cost, the family wants to buy a used car because they are worried that their child has just arrived in the city and is still "strange in the country and unfamiliar with the city". Furthermore, the parents have planned to work as a motorbike taxi driver after school, so buying a used car is... safe.
According to the family, although the child is not under pressure to earn money, they want him to work part-time early to gain experience. Both parents and child are aiming to become a technology motorbike taxi driver.

Immediately, many opinions said that the family and the male student should not choose to drive a motorbike taxi right after entering school, without trying other part-time job opportunities.
Many people frankly commented that new students who choose to drive motorbike taxis are no different from considering this as the most preferred part-time job. Thus, they have given up many opportunities to gain experience and develop their careers in the future.
Not long ago, a video on TikTok claiming that students should not drive motorbike taxis because "if you drive Grab, you will drive Grab for life" became a hot topic of debate.
According to this TikToker, driving a motorbike taxi does not help students gain any experience or necessary skills for future jobs.
After 4 years of driving motorbike taxis, students graduate without much special work experience to approach the labor market. Therefore, students may be stuck with the job of "driving motorbike taxis" for life.
Besides the majority agreeing with the above point of view, there are also many people who think that this perspective is "rigid", when the job of driving a motorbike taxi can also bring certain values to students.
Therefore, not only do many students who work part-time immediately think of driving a motorbike taxi, but in fact many unemployed graduates also choose this job.
According to many opinions, the job of driving a motorbike taxi does not help students develop their skills and careers much (Photo: Hoai Nam).
Master Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said that working part-time is a good way for new students to earn extra income and gain experience. However, they should consider carefully before choosing to drive a motorbike taxi.
The advantages of driving a technology car are being proactive about time, having a stable income, "cash on delivery" and being able to practice some skills. However, for students, this job is quite risky, unsafe and difficult to develop professional skills.
According to Mr. Pham Thai Son, students can choose other more suitable jobs such as tutoring, a popular and suitable job. This job not only brings good income but also helps students consolidate their professional knowledge.
In addition, there are many other jobs suitable for students such as sales staff, service staff to help students practice communication skills, teamwork, and customer service skills.
Freelance work is a suitable choice for students with writing skills, graphic design, programming, translation, online marketing collaborators. Or work part-time at companies related to the field of study to accumulate practical experience, improve professional knowledge and develop necessary skills for future careers.
Importantly, Mr. Son emphasized, students need to balance work and study, prioritizing choosing jobs that can help develop soft skills or expertise related to their field of study to further develop themselves.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem, Deputy Head of the Administrative Organization Department, Ho Chi Minh City Student Support Center, shared that families should guide their children to find part-time jobs such as tutoring, serving in restaurants, eateries, selling, introducing products, supporting event organization... to help increase social practice skills.

"You can focus on part-time jobs related to your future career to learn and determine whether your chosen career is suitable or not.
Currently, the number of technology motorbike taxi drivers is in surplus, and income is no longer as good as before. Not to mention, for students, driving on the road continuously can affect their physical health and academic performance," Ms. Diem warned.
