Nguyen Huong Giang is currently a student at the Faculty of Early Childhood Education, Thai Nguyen University Branch in Lao Cai. Having experience in making drinks since she was a high school student, Giang immediately got a shift job at a coffee shop near the school after getting used to the new learning environment.

Every day, Giang goes to school in the morning and goes to work in the afternoon. The monthly income from her part-time job helps Giang pay for her rent and some personal expenses.

Giang confided: The job is not related to my major but helps me meet many people, gain more life skills, and know how to behave and handle situations that arise in life.

Currently, the jobs that students are looking for are mainly seasonal, can be done after school hours or during summer vacation such as sales, tutoring, telephone answering, transporting goods, motorbike taxi, distributing leaflets, babysitting... However, for 3rd and 4th year students, many have chosen part-time jobs related to their major to accumulate professional skills and have more opportunities to find a job after graduation. Especially in big cities, part-time jobs are also more diverse and easier to find.

La Thi Huyen (Khanh Yen town, Van Ban district) is a final year student majoring in Organization and Management of Tourism in Ethnic Minorities (Faculty of Ethnic Minority Culture, Hanoi University of Culture). In addition to studying, Huyen works as a hotel receptionist. Huyen started this job about 2 months ago (after finishing her graduation internship).

Before that, Huyen had worked other part-time jobs such as fashion staff, supermarket cashier, cosmetics sales, product marketing staff, event receptionist... In addition to income, Huyen's main purpose of working many part-time jobs after school is to get acquainted with the real working environment, gain experience and expand relationships.

Many students do not just do one thing outside of school hours, but also make the most of their free time by doing multiple jobs.

Doan Thi May from Ban Phiet Commune (Bao Thang District) is a third-year student majoring in Mass Communication at the Academy of Journalism and Communication. Being dynamic, hard-working and diligent, May is currently working two part-time jobs at the same time. May works as a cashier at an exam preparation center, each shift lasts about 4 hours/day.

In addition, May also works as a real estate consultant. This job has flexible working hours, not being constrained, so May can take the initiative in studying and working part-time. “Studying at school must always be a priority. However, if you know how to arrange, balance your time and choose the right job, students can absolutely do many jobs outside of class,” May said.

May balances her studies and part-time jobs by: Every week, she arranges her work schedule, her study schedule, and makes a list of tasks and assignments that need to be completed during the week. “Whether working part-time or studying, you have to focus to complete everything as quickly as possible,” May added.

Jobs sought by students are mainly seasonal (1).jpg

The job has greatly supported May's studies and life. As a third-year student, there are many specialized subjects that require practical knowledge, and working outside helps May complete those subjects. Having tried many jobs, May had an income by the end of her second year and was able to support herself in Hanoi.

“My parents had a hard time raising two sisters through college. At first, I worked part-time to reduce the burden on my family, but then I wanted to gain new experiences and try my hand at many jobs so as not to waste my youth. Working part-time is also an opportunity for me to gain more life experience,” May confided.

In recent years, the movement of part-time jobs has become popular among students, not only for students with difficult circumstances but also for those with good family conditions. Part-time jobs bring students many new things, helping them shorten the gap between theory and practice, thereby becoming more mature in life. However, each student needs to determine for themselves a suitable job as well as know how to arrange their time so as not to affect their health and studies, preparing the best luggage for the future.
