A new report released by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on May 10 said: This year's record high April temperatures were caused by the El Nino phenomenon (which is weakening) and global climate change. Extreme weather events such as record heat waves lasted as long as the strong El Nino of 2015-2016.
April heat record everywhere
In April, the average surface air temperature was 15.03°C, 0.67°C higher than the April average from 1991 to 2020; notably, it was 0.14°C higher than the previous record set in April 2016. Compared to the pre-industrial period (1850 - 1900), April this year was 1.58°C warmer, while according to the Paris Agreement, the temperature increase needs to be kept below 1.5°C.
In addition to air temperatures, global sea surface temperatures have also been record highs for the past 13 consecutive months.
Sea surface temperatures in several ocean basins, including the tropics, continue to be record highs, releasing more heat and moisture into the atmosphere, making weather conditions more extreme, said Alvaro Silva, a WMO climate expert.
Vietnam and the world recorded record heat in April
Extreme weather events are occurring, such as a severe heat wave that has been sweeping across Asia. In India, the heat wave has been going on since April and will continue into early May, with the highest temperature of 47.2 degrees Celsius recorded in West Bengal on April 30. Meanwhile, Bangladesh has closed schools due to the dangerous heat.
Thailand recorded a new temperature record of 44.1 degrees Celsius in Mueang Phetchabun district in the north of the country on April 27. In Myanmar, there was also a new temperature record of 48.2 degrees Celsius in Chauk.
Mexico also recorded an unusually high temperature of 45.8 degrees Celsius on May 2.
In contrast, extremely heavy rainfall occurred in the Arabian Peninsula. In addition, persistent heavy rains in eastern Africa and southern Brazil worsened in the first week of May, leading to severe flooding.
In Vietnam, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that historic heat waves also occurred 3 times in April. Of which, there was a particularly severe heat wave in the last days of April, with 2 times recording a record temperature of 44 degrees Celsius. Specifically, on April 28 in Dong Ha (Quang Tri), the new temperature increased by 1.9 degrees Celsius compared to the old record in 1980. On April 30, in Tuong Duong (Nghe An), the temperature was also recorded at 44 degrees Celsius, 1.6 degrees Celsius higher than the old record from 2019.
