What practical strategies can help Vietnam integrate green infrastructure and sustainable practices into urban planning? How can individuals, businesses, experts and governments work together to accelerate the green transition? What can Vietnam learn from Denmark’s best practices in addressing urbanization challenges?
These urgent questions were the focus of discussion at the event “Discussion ‘Green Urban Transformation – From Denmark to Vietnam’” taking place today (November 28) at the Temple of Literature – Quoc Tu Giam, Hanoi.
Focus of Vietnam-Denmark cooperation
Ranked in the top 3 most sustainable and livable cities in the world, Copenhagen has a lot of experience to share and inspire Vietnam on its green urban transformation journey.
Green and sustainable transition is one of the key issues in the cooperation between Vietnam and Denmark, according to Ms. Mette Ekeroth, Deputy Ambassador of Denmark to Vietnam.
“Vietnam and Denmark share a strong commitment to sustainable development within the framework of the Green Strategic Partnership. Economic security must go hand in hand with social and environmental security,” the Deputy Ambassador shared.
According to speaker Henriette Vamberg, Gehl Director for Europe, Asia and Australia, "There are many different approaches to green urban transition, and I look forward to sharing some of these experiences with the audience in Hanoi," adding that the solutions Gehl offers are both bold on a large scale, strategic and concrete.
During the event, delegates discussed strategies and practical solutions in integrating green infrastructure and sustainable practices into urban planning, as well as specific projects in major cities around the world that have successfully transformed their models to become greener and more sustainable that Vietnam can learn from.
Green Platform
According to the Vietnam Urban and Rural System Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, Vietnam's urbanization rate is expected to exceed 50% by 2030. As the world moves towards a greener future, cities play a pioneering role in developing innovative solutions to respond to climate change. Green urban transformation is not only a trend but also a necessity to create livable, resilient and sustainable urban environments for future generations.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1971, Vietnam and Denmark have enjoyed a close and sustainable cooperative relationship. On November 1, 2023, the two Prime Ministers jointly announced the establishment of the Green Strategic Partnership (GSP) between Vietnam and Denmark.
The signing of the GSP marks an important milestone in the cooperation between the two countries and establishes a solid framework to support Vietnam in developing a climate-resilient, low-carbon economy and promoting the development of a circular economy.
The GSP builds on and strengthens existing cooperation in the areas of: Climate, Environment and Energy, Agriculture and Food, Trade and Business Cooperation, Health and Life Sciences, Statistics and other joint initiatives.
