The demand for overseas travel among Indians has recorded strong growth in recent times. Among them, Vietnam has emerged as a top favorite destination.
According to the Global Tourism Trends 2024 report recently released by the Mastercard Economic Institute, the number of Indian visitors to Vietnam increased by 248% compared to 2019; followed by the US and Japan with growth rates of 59% and 53%, respectively.
Data from January to March 2024 also shows a shift in Indian tourists’ travel preferences. The report says that with around 20 million Indians expected to join the middle class in the next five years, the country’s tourism industry will continue to grow strongly.

David Mann, economist at Mastercard Economics, said the number of international flights from India is at a record high. India is currently the fastest growing market in the world and will continue to grow in the near future, with strong demand for tourism and luxury products. In the first quarter of 2024, Indian airports recorded 97 million passengers, including domestic and international passengers.
The Mastercard Economic Institute report also found that Indian travelers tended to extend their trips by one day compared to 2019, reflecting the demand for diverse and rich travel experiences. Beach trips also grew significantly, surpassing the peak of 2019.
