At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Information and Communications on the afternoon of August 8, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen - Deputy Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information explained the proposed regulation on authenticating social network user accounts (Facebook, TikTok, Zalo...) by phone number.
According to Ms. Huyen, currently, domestic and cross-border social networks require users to verify personal information when registering by email, phone number or ID card.
The Ministry of Information and Communications has requested the authentication of social network accounts by phone number for the following reasons: First, the situation of fraud crimes in cyberspace is increasing. This regulation is proposed from the need for state management as well as the need of people to more closely manage social network accounts to limit online fraud.

Second, social networks are very large, and authentication by personal phone number will help users increase their responsibility and awareness when providing information on social networks.
Third, Ms. Huyen affirmed that the issuance of this regulation is completely consistent with current legal regulations. The important legal basis of this regulation is the Law on Cyber Security.
Finally, "currently, social network users tend to switch from using computers to using mobile devices. Therefore, authenticating social network accounts with mobile phone numbers will be more convenient for users," said Ms. Huyen.
