Why are search results on Threads not in chronological order?

Instagram's Threads recently rolled out an advanced keyword search feature to users globally. The Meta-owned social media app began testing it in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year before rolling it out to other regions with Threads.

Instagram CEO explains how chronological search results are vulnerable to abuse

Keyword search has been on the list of highly requested Threads features. It provides content from other users and creators based on entered keywords. However, one thing it currently doesn’t do is display posts in chronological order.

“Can search results on Threads be displayed in chronological order?” one user asked Instagram head Adam Mosseri. In his response, Mosseri warned that displaying search results in chronological order could make it easier for bad actors to abuse the platform and bombard it with spam, according to Neowin .

He explained that chronological search is an opportunity for bad guys, spammers, or others to abuse it. If something happens in the world, they can attack that search results page by adding words that match the bad guys' spam links or whatever.

For this reason, the company has to balance the risk of spam attacks with allowing search results to appear in chronological order but not including every single post, which could lead to accusations of censorship.

“It's not as simple as people think, but we're certainly exploring all options,” said Adam Mosseri.

For reference, Threads' rival platform X allows users to view search results in chronological order by providing multiple tabs. When browsing results for a particular keyword, users can switch to the "Latest" tab to display results in chronological order.

In recent news, users finally have the option to delete their Threads profile without deleting Instagram. The app is reportedly set to launch in the European Union (EU) this month, but its initial version is expected to be read-only.
