On January 26, 1968, Vinh Phuc and Phu Tho provinces merged into Vinh Phu province according to Resolution No. 504-NQ/TVQH of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. On January 1, 1997, Vinh Phu province was split into two provinces, Vinh Phuc and Phu Tho. Currently, Vinh Phuc is one of the provinces with large contributions to the central budget.

According to information from the People's Committee of Vinh Phuc province, on February 12, 1950, Vinh Phuc province was established on the basis of merging Vinh Yen and Phuc Yen provinces. The area of Vinh Phuc province when newly merged was 1,715km2, with a population of 470,000 people.

On January 26, 1968, the National Assembly Standing Committee issued Resolution No. 504/NQ-QH on merging Vinh Phuc and Phu Tho provinces into Vinh Phu province. Vinh Phu province has an area of 5,103 km2, nearly 1.3 million people, including 90,000 ethnic minorities; administrative units include: Viet Tri city, 3 towns (Phu Tho, Vinh Yen, Phuc Yen), 18 districts, 4 towns and 422 communes.

After nearly 29 years of unification, in November 1996, the 9th National Assembly, 10th session, issued a Resolution to separate Vinh Phu province into two provinces, Vinh Phuc and Phu Tho. Vinh Phuc province was re-established and put into operation from January 1, 1997.

When re-established, Vinh Phuc province had an area of 1,370.73 km2, a population of 1.1 million people; had 6 districts and towns (Vinh Yen town, Lap Thach district, Tam Dao district, Vinh Tuong district, Yen Lac district and Me Linh district) with 148 communes, wards and towns, including one district and 39 mountainous communes.

Meanwhile, September 8, 1891 is considered the founding date of Phu Tho because according to Article I of the Decree of the Governor General of Indochina dated September 8, 1891, the newly established Hung Hoa province included the districts of Tam Nong, Thanh Thuy, Son Vi, Thanh Ba, Phu Ninh. It can be considered that Hung Hoa province is the predecessor of Phu Tho province later.

On May 5, 1903, the name Phu Tho was established when the Governor-General of Indochina signed a decree to establish Phu Tho town on the basis of Phu Tho village, Yen Phu commune, Son Vi district.

After many changes in administrative boundaries, Vinh Phuc province now has a natural area of over 1.2 km2 and a population of over 1.2 million people. Vinh Phuc borders 4 provinces and cities: to the north it borders Tuyen Quang and Thai Nguyen provinces; to the west it borders Phu Tho province; to the south it borders Hanoi; to the east it borders Soc Son and Dong Anh districts - Hanoi.

The province has 9 administrative units, including 2 cities: Vinh Yen and Phuc Yen; 7 districts: Vinh Tuong, Yen Lac, Binh Xuyen, Lap Thach, Tam Duong, Tam Dao, Song Lo; with 136 communes, wards and towns.

Since the re-establishment of the province, the economy of Vinh Phuc province has changed dramatically with many important achievements. The economic growth rate of the province has always been high over the years; especially in some years, the economic growth reached over 20%.

On average, in the period 1997-2021, the economic growth rate (GRDP) reached 13.42%/year; in 2024 it is estimated to reach 7.52%, higher than the average growth rate of the whole country. The material and spiritual life of the people is increasingly improved and enhanced.

The economic structure of Vinh Phuc province has seen a rapid increase in the proportion of foreign-invested sectors due to the policy of focusing on attracting industrial development and foreign investment. At the same time, with the policy of transforming and restructuring state-owned enterprises being strongly implemented, the proportion of the state sector has decreased; the non-state sector has received attention and is operating more and more effectively.

The economic structure continues to shift in a positive direction. In 2024, the industry and construction sector will account for 62.37%; the service sector will account for 30.88%; the agriculture, forestry and fishery sector will account for 6.75% (in 1997, the economic structure was 18.4%, 36.47%, 45.13%, respectively).

From a province dependent on the central budget, Vinh Phuc is now one of the provinces and cities that contribute to the central budget. In 1997, the state budget revenue in the province was 114 billion VND; by 2002, it exceeded 1,000 billion VND; since 2004, Vinh Phuc has been able to balance its budget expenditures and contribute and regulate to the central budget; in 2024, it is estimated to reach 30,468 billion VND. Vinh Phuc has been assessed by the Central Government as one of the provinces that has contributed greatly to the central budget over the past many years.

Meanwhile, according to information from the People's Committee of Phu Tho province, in 2024, Phu Tho achieved a growth rate of 9.53%, the highest in the past 15 years, in the group of 10/63 localities with high growth rates nationwide, ranking 3rd/14 provinces in the Northern midland and mountainous region. The economic scale of the province reached over 109.2 trillion VND, an increase of over 11,000 billion VND compared to 2023, ranking 35th nationwide, ranking 3rd in the Northern midland and mountainous region.

Most of the important indicators of Phu Tho province have been achieved quite well, notably: Industrial production increased by 16.4%; the index of industrial production for processing and manufacturing in 11 months increased by 42.1%, among the highest in the country. Total import-export turnover is estimated at 30.25 billion USD, of which export reached 15.4 billion USD, continuing to be in the group of 10 localities with high contributions to the country's import-export.
