Despite growing up in a cramped rented room for workers and having to collect rubber latex to earn money for school, this girl always achieved excellent academic results.
The girl with strong will overcome difficulties and study well
That is the story of Nguyen Hoa Kim Thai (22 years old), a former student of the University of Economics and Law, Ho Chi Minh City. Thai was born into a family with difficult circumstances. When she was young, she lived in a cramped rented house for workers in Thuan An City (Binh Duong Province). Later, when her parents divorced, Thai returned to her hometown (Dau Tieng District, Binh Duong Province) to live with her mother and grandmother. At that time, the family's economy depended entirely on her mother, but because of her leg disability, she could not do heavy work.
Kim Thai graduated with honors and was valedictorian of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Law.

“Because I live in a remote area, the government supported part of my school expenses. In addition, I participated in many competitions and tried to win prizes to get bonuses. I also used to collect each kilogram of rubber latex and sell it for a few thousand dong to earn more money for school and help my mother with living expenses. Due to difficult circumstances, I thought that the university gate was closed. However, I thought that only by trying to study hard could my family escape poverty. That was the motivation for me to always try my best in my studies,” Thai confided. For 12 consecutive years, Thai has achieved the highest results in the block; received many awards and titles in competitions, and participated in the Road to Olympia competition in 2019. Most notably, a few months ago, Thai graduated with honors and was the valedictorian of the whole school with a cumulative average score of 9.34/10. For 7 consecutive semesters, Thai has received academic encouragement scholarships and 14 scholarships from businesses.
Overcoming circumstances, Kim Thai always achieved excellent academic results.

“Once I entered the university, I tried to maintain my excellent academic performance to "hunt" for scholarships to cover my living expenses. Besides, I did many extra jobs such as tutoring, recording, writing content, translating,” Thai said. Sharing her study secrets, Thai said that being proactive is the key factor. “I always take the initiative to plan my studies, set goals and try to achieve them. Moreover, I proactively seek opportunities by participating in programs and experiencing competitions. I have a habit of controlling my activities through a notebook,” Thai shared. Admitting that she is a poor student who overcame difficulties, Thai shared that the motivation that urged her to strive was because going to school has great meaning not only for herself but also for her family. “Only studying can help my family's future become brighter. I also have many dreams and only I can make them come true,” Thai expressed.
Constantly striving to spread values to the community
Not only graduating with honors, Thai also impressed with 15 scientific research projects, topics, and articles in the country and internationally. She shared: “I pursue research in the field of social sciences, specializing in economics, which are issues quite close to daily life. I just hope that the things I have spent time researching and exploring will contribute to some improvement in the future, creating changes and innovations to improve people's lives more and more”.
Kim Thai is always active in the Youth Union, Association and youth movement.

In addition, Thai also had the opportunity to participate in international youth and student exchange programs such as: POSCO Asian Young Leaders Program in Korea in 2023; Champasak Province Summer Volunteer Campaign, Laos in 2022; ASEAN - Korea Youth Summit in 2021; ASEAN - China Young Leaders Summit in 2021; Vietnam - Singapore Student Exchange Program in 2021; SAKURA Japan Science and Technology Exchange Program in 2021; Graduated with honors in the Energy Science course at Kyoto University, Japan... In addition, since his student days, Thai has also been a pioneer in the work of the Union, Association and youth movement. Currently, Thai is holding the position of member of the Secretariat of the Binh Duong Provincial Student Association. At the same time, Thai also actively organizes and participates in volunteer programs and campaigns such as: Green Summer, Volunteer Spring, Exam Support...

With her achievements in research and study, Thai is one of the individuals honored to receive the 2024 Beautiful Youth Award. She shared: “I am very touched because my small contributions have been recognized. For me, every act of contributing to the community has its own meaning. Especially in the field of study, I always try to spread the message of constantly striving and striving. From a student with difficult circumstances to the valedictorian of the whole school, an active and enthusiastic Youth Union and Association officer who actively participates in many community activities. During that process, the Beautiful Youth Award will always be the motivation for me to continue to strive, not only to excellently fulfill my academic obligations but also in social activities”.
The 2024 "Beautiful Youth" Award is organized by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Union in collaboration with TCP Vietnam Company Limited. The award ceremony will take place in October 2024 in Hanoi.
