Outside and inside a sleep box introduced in the "Western street" An Thuong, Da Nang
20 - 30 m² for 10 sleeping boxes?
Recently, dorm room and sleep box rentals have been widely introduced in room rental groups.
This rental model was imported from Hong Kong and Japan and has flourished in big cities in our country because it is suitable for tenants who spend most of their time on the street.
The lodger rents a small sleeping compartment of just a few square metres in a shared room with many other people, in order to optimise costs and space.
Mr. Huynh Ba Khanh, 22 years old, a motorbike taxi driver, said that for more than a year now he has chosen to rent a "sleeping box" in the Tay An Thuong area (Ngu Hanh Son district, Da Nang) because he finds it suitable for his needs.
Mr. Khanh said that his job as a driver is constantly on the road so he doesn't need to spend too much money to rent a room, because his main need is a place to shower and rest.
"The sleep box I rented only cost 1.5 million VND, and it's located in a place with many foreigners, so it's very convenient. I can go back to sleep whenever I feel sleepy, and the air conditioning is free 24/7. I don't have much stuff, so I mainly come here to rest for about 6 hours a day," said Mr. Khanh.
According to records in Da Nang, not only are there dorm rooms (bunk beds like dormitories) and sleep boxes in hotel accommodation facilities, but many individual houses have been renovated in this form for long-term rental.
In which, the tenants are mainly young people who have time to work and live outdoors.
Many rooms are only about 20-30 square meters wide but have more than 10 "sleeping boxes" for rent.
With the current rental price, if the room efficiency is high, many landlords can earn more than 10 million VND, much higher than the traditional way of renting rooms.

Staying at a hostel should be done with caution.
According to a lawyer from the Da Nang City Bar Association, there are currently only National Technical Regulations on apartment buildings issued by the Ministry of Construction.
Regulations require that an apartment must have at least one living room and one bathroom. And the minimum usable area of an apartment is not less than 25m2 .
Meanwhile, the current type of boarding house is mainly exploited from individual houses licensed for construction by the district, then the owner applies for a boarding house rental business.
Currently, this type does not have specific regulations on minimum standards for accommodation, so there are no standards for rental rooms.
Regarding the sleep box type of room, Ms. Truong Phuong Linh, a travel blogger in Da Nang, said that this is a fairly new type of rental accommodation in Vietnam.
However, this type has appeared for many years in Hong Kong and the press often refers to it as "sleeping cocoons" or "sleeping boxes".
In Vietnam, this type was first introduced at airports to serve the privacy needs of passengers while waiting for their flights.
"I am not unfamiliar with these types of accommodation because I have stayed there before when traveling abroad. However, I think that if dorm rooms and sleep boxes are used for long-term stays like renting a room, it is too dangerous.
Not only is there a risk of fire or explosion, but there is also the possibility of turning the area into a slum, affecting the psychology of those who live long-term in this space," she said.
Staying while traveling is different from staying long term.
According to Ms. Linh, there is a difference when using "sleeping cocoon" rooms for short-term, temporary stays as a place to rest, requiring privacy to protect property compared to the current form of use similar to a motel.
Because it is a long-term stay, there is an additional "home" factor, which means there will be a lot more furniture, vehicles, a place to dry and wash clothes and secure other assets...
