Charitable acts of each individual stemming from compassion and sympathy for another person are not a way to resolve karma, nor are they creating karma as some people mistakenly think. This is a voluntary act, and no individual should or can be asked to support, no matter how much or how little.
I started doing charity work more than 20 years ago and I myself am one of the contacts who receive donations from people to do charity work. We will work directly with the hospital to know how much money this patient needs for surgery costs or support for medicine, hospital beds... then we call for those specific taxes. Or we directly support hospitals that lack machinery, equipment... with a specific amount, very easy to calculate clearly. We will stop receiving donations when the number reaches the required level. In cases of storms, floods, natural disasters... we usually help at a general level, for example, each family will receive about 500 thousand - 1 million VND depending on the amount of money raised.
In many years of doing charity, I have noticed that in the beginning, after calling for donations, we will receive a lot of support. Then the support will decrease. At that time, we will have to look back and reconsider the reasons why. Typically, during the Covid 19 outbreak, at first, people supported very enthusiastically because people were still financially well off, then they had to take care of themselves and their families who were still struggling. Realizing that, we switched to another approach because I understand that charity must come from two factors: necessary and sufficient.
There was a time when I stopped donating to charity and turned to other things. For example, supporting the education of sick children. The support here is educational support, not financial support because the children's parents are still alive and have the financial ability to take care of their children. I still ask the parents to pay for food and accommodation, while I teach almost for free. I think that is also a way to help others, without having to donate or call for support...
During the recent Typhoon Yagi, my group supported the flood victims with practical gifts such as clothes, books, food, etc. At that time, we did not distinguish between poor and well-off families because in the storm and flood situation, almost every family lacked those things, and even if you had money, you might not be able to buy them. Here, I would like to reiterate that charitable support must meet the two words "necessary" and "sufficient".
Currently, there are many individuals and organizations participating in charity fundraising and calling for contributions. My personal opinion is that we should trust state organizations such as the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the Red Cross, etc. They have the obligation to do this and have the resources to complete this in the best way. As for individuals calling for charity support, in addition to trusting their reputation and working style, benefactors should also regularly monitor the use of funds by following their activities and updating them on this content. If they do wrong or are not satisfactory, their reputation will certainly be reduced, affecting future donations or their own work.
However, I think that even if there are scandals, they are only a few, and will not destroy everyone's faith in charity. Because our nation has a tradition of helping each other, no matter what the circumstances, helping each other will always happen and believing in good and humane things will last forever.
The first people to do charity for difficult cases of patients are doctors and nurses. They never let extremely difficult cases go unnoticed. This help can come from themselves and their colleagues. They will also contact charitable organizations to call for support so that patients can feel secure in their treatment.
