Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc made this statement in his opening speech at the 75th anniversary of the national resistance war against the US (March 19, 1950 - March 19, 2025) on March 19, at Ton Tho Tuong School (now Ten-Lơ-Man High School, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City).
It was here that the late Lawyer Nguyen Huu Tho, former Acting President, Chairman of the National Assembly, and former Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, read a speech that was not only a call from a patriotic intellectual, but also demonstrated the indomitable will of the Vietnamese youth generation during the period of struggle against colonialism and imperialism.
"The demonstration was successful, forcing the US to cancel the naval exercise, and two US warships to withdraw that night, marking a turning point in the anti-US struggle of the people in the South. From this event, the student movement spread throughout the South, marking an important turning point in the movement against US intervention in Vietnam," emphasized Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc.
Also at the Commemoration Ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Huu Chau, the eldest son of the late Lawyer Nguyen Huu Tho, spoke to review the proud tradition and history of resistance of the nation in general and the family tradition in particular.
According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Chau, the historical event "National Anti-American Day" is closely associated with the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025) to pay tribute to and honor the contributions of predecessors, previous generations, heroic martyrs, especially educating the tradition of patriotism and indomitable resilience of our ancestors, when entering the era of national growth.
Reviewing the history of the struggle for national independence , 75 years ago, the historic event of March 19, 1950, right at the roof of the school named after Ton Tho Tuong (now Ten-Lơ-Man), Lawyer Nguyen Huu Tho, despite the brutal repression of the enemy against the seething struggle movement of the people, called on and hundreds of thousands of people to take to the streets to fiercely fight against the intervention of 2 warships of the US 7th Fleet , assisting the French colonialists who were invading our country.
Meanwhile, in Hanoi , Vice President Ton Duc Thang and comrades Truong Chinh, Pham Hung and tens of thousands of people took to the streets to condemn the US intervention. The strength of national unity forced two US warships to leave Saigon port . From this historic event , March 19, 1950 became the "National Day of Anti-Americanism".
Talking about his father, Mr. Nguyen Huu Chau said that the Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front - Nguyen Huu Tho participated in leading the Southern Revolution to the final victory on April 30, 1975 to liberate the South and unify the country.
After the liberation day, Lawyer Nguyen Huu Tho successively took on many important responsibilities: Vice President , Acting President , Chairman of the National Assembly, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front. On December 24, 1996 , he passed away peacefully .
"At the end of his life, my father never owned a house. For Lawyer Nguyen Huu Tho , when our people are freed from slavery, when the country is happy, then each family will be happy. His greatest happiness is "being able to follow the Ho Chi Minh trail when he was at a crossroads in the night of slavery", Mr. Nguyen Huu Tho was moved.
On this occasion, the leadership, teachers and students of Ten-Lơ-Man High School organized many activities to celebrate the 75th anniversary of National Resistance Day and the 75th anniversary of Students' Traditional Day.
On the same day, the delegation of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and departments cut the ribbon to inaugurate the exhibition house displaying souvenirs of "National Resistance Day" and the student movement of Saigon - Cho Lon during the years of fierce struggle in the Southern battlefield.
Here, there is also a dedicated display room containing many valuable photos and memorabilia of the late Lawyer Nguyen Huu Tho, donated by the family of Mr. Nguyen Huu Chau, the eldest son of the late Lawyer Nguyen Huu Tho.
