Relations between the US and South Africa have deteriorated with the US government's decision to expel the South African ambassador.
The reason is that when speaking to a media outlet, this ambassador made statements about the Washington administration's policies that were assessed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio as "racist" and "hating President Donald Trump".
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio
In diplomacy and world politics, the expulsion of ambassadors always represents a very bad situation and a very abnormal level of relations between countries. For the US and South Africa, this is a new peak but also a development in the process of deteriorating relations between the two sides since Mr. Trump returned to the White House.
First, the Trump administration decided to stop all financial, technical and humanitarian aid to South Africa, negatively affecting many socio-economic development programs and projects in South Africa. This country is currently the rotating chair of the G20 group, but Mr. Marco Rubio boycotted the meeting of foreign ministers of the group's member countries chaired by South Africa. The reason was that the US accused South Africa of discriminating against white people in South Africa in its land law. Mr. Trump also announced that he would accept white people from South Africa to settle in the US.
The disagreement between the US and South Africa became very difficult to reconcile because South Africa strongly opposed Israel and brought the Israeli Prime Minister to the International Criminal Court. The disagreement was even more difficult to overcome when the US also wanted to use this to warn and deter many other parties.
