In the first eight months of the year, China spent nearly 3.1 billion USD buying fruits and vegetables from Vietnam, an increase of more than 36% over the same period last year.

According to data from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports in the first eight months of the year reached nearly $5 billion, up 33% over the same period last year. China continues to be the largest market, accounting for over 65% of the market share. This country spent nearly $3.1 billion buying fruits and vegetables from Vietnam.

Other markets such as the US, South Korea, Thailand and Japan also recorded an increase of 35-90% in fruit and vegetable imports from Vietnam.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, commented that fruit and vegetable exports are rising to the top position among agricultural products, surpassing rice - which is the main export item. "Fruit and vegetable exports are growing strongly, especially thanks to the demand for durian from China," Mr. Nguyen said.

Last month, during General Secretary and President To Lam’s visit to China, the two countries signed a protocol on the export of frozen durian and fresh melon to the billion-people market, opening up great opportunities for Vietnamese agricultural products. Frozen durian exports are expected to reach 400-500 million USD this year, while fresh coconuts could add another 200-300 million USD. This is an important driving force for sustainable development of the agricultural sector.

Besides China, neighboring markets have also increased their imports of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables. For example, Vietnamese fruit and vegetable exports to Thailand increased by more than 66% in the past 8 months. "Recently, packaging and product quality have increasingly met the strict requirements of international partners," said the CEO of a fruit and vegetable exporting company.

This year, fruit and vegetable exports could reach 7 billion USD, thanks to strong demand during the year-end holidays.
