(Dan Tri) - The leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport said that the locality is short of about 250,000 driver's license blanks. The sudden increase in demand for driver's license renewal is partly due to misunderstanding.
At a press conference on the socio-economic situation of Ho Chi Minh City on the afternoon of November 28, Mr. Bui Hoa An, Deputy Director of the Department of Transport, shared about the shortage of driver's license blanks. Although the number of blanks registered increased by 10% compared to last year, the number of driver's license blanks in Ho Chi Minh City still cannot meet the sudden increase in demand from the people.
"Every year, provinces and cities need to summarize the demand for the number of blanks to register with the Department of Roads for bidding. After bidding, the Department of Transport will sign a contract appendix to buy back the necessary number of blanks," Mr. Bui Hoa An analyzed.

Recently, some provinces, cities and Ho Chi Minh City have had to temporarily stop issuing and exchanging driving licenses, and even suspend driving license exams. The Department of Roads has compiled the needs of provinces and cities to continue bidding in the coming time.
In addition, a large number of people from neighboring provinces and cities also come to Ho Chi Minh City to issue and renew their driving licenses. Therefore, the demand for driving license blanks in the area is increasing.
"The city has been short of about 250,000 driver's license blanks since October. It is expected that this problem will be resolved by December," the Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport affirmed.
According to the leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, the sudden increase in demand for license blanks is partly due to people's misunderstanding. Many people believe that old driving licenses are no longer valid when the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety takes effect from January 1, 2025.
Mr. Bui Hoa An clarified that all valid driving licenses, even those issued before 1995, are valid from January 1, 2025 until the expiration date. Recently, the transport sector has coordinated with the Department of Administrative Police for Social Order to update all types of driving licenses to the VNEID software before people receive their physical driving licenses.
Regarding the situation of trains and vehicles from Ho Chi Minh City to other provinces and cities during Tet, the Deputy Director of the Department of Transport affirmed that there will be no shortage of vehicles. It is expected that during the peak of Tet, bus companies in the area will serve an average of 94,000 passengers/day with more than 6,500 trips/day.
During the 2025 Tet holiday, a number of regional expressways have been put into use, helping to reduce travel time. In addition, the management boards of export processing zones, industrial parks, and some units also let their employees go on Tet holiday early, so travel demand will not increase suddenly at one time.
