It is expected that Ho Chi Minh City will compensate and relocate 5,102/6,500 houses on and along canals in 2025.

On the afternoon of October 24, at a regular press conference on the socio-economic situation in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Ly Thanh Long, Chief of Office of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, provided information on the plan to relocate and clear houses on and along canals.

According to Mr. Long, Ho Chi Minh City set a target of compensating and relocating 6,500 houses on and along canals. To date, Ho Chi Minh City has compensated and relocated 1,149/6,500 houses. Of these, 2 projects have been completed; 7 projects are in progress, and the relocation is expected to be completed before April 30, 2025.

These are projects to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and national reunification, with the focus being the Xuyen Tam canal project (relocating 2,215 houses).

"According to the current capital arrangement plan, by the end of 2025, it is expected that compensation and relocation will be completed for 5,102/6,500 units, reaching 78.49% of the set target," said Mr. Long.

In addition, according to Mr. Long, the city budget is only balanced for transitional projects, projects under construction and some key projects that are urgently prioritized for investment, limiting capital allocation for projects without clean land or projects with many problems in compensation. This affects the progress of implementation and completion in the period of 2021-2025.

Currently, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment is advising the City People's Committee to issue other measures and support levels to ensure housing, stabilize life and production for people whose land is recovered, owners of assets attached to land in the project of dredging, improving the environment and building infrastructure of Xuyen Tam canal and the project of dredging, building infrastructure, improving the environment of the North bank of Doi Canal.

In addition, the Department of Construction is proposing that the City People's Committee assign the Department of Planning and Investment to review and supplement the Medium-term Public Investment Plan and allocate capital to carry out investment preparation tasks and carry out site clearance compensation for three projects not yet included in the Medium-term Public Investment Plan 2021-2025.

These three projects include: Hy Vong Canal renovation in Tan Binh District; Van Thanh Canal dredging and renovation project in Binh Thanh District; and Te Canal infrastructure construction and environmental improvement project in District 4.

"If the above three projects are approved by the City People's Committee to be added to the medium-term public investment capital plan and capital is allocated to carry out compensation and site clearance, the total number of houses to be relocated on and along rivers, canals and ditches in the 2021-2025 period will increase to 6,906 units, reaching 106.25% of the set target," said Mr. Long.
