According to Interfax, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Chechen Republic of the Russian Federation on the evening of August 20. This is his first visit to the North Caucasus region since 2011.
President Putin met with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, a key Kremlin ally who has deployed thousands of fighters to help the Federal Government in its special military operation in Ukraine.
Earlier, President Putin visited other regions in the North Caucasus including Kabardino-Balkaria and North Ossetia. In North Ossetia, he visited the Beslan school, where more than 330 people were killed during the 2004 siege by Chechen rebels, and visited a memorial.
President Putin appointed Mr Kadyrov as leader of Chechnya in 2007 when Mr Kadyrov was just 30 years old, after his father Akhmat Kadyrov was killed in a stadium bombing in 2004. Mr P Utin began his visit to Chechnya with a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of Akhmat Kadyrov.
In another development, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov announced on August 20 that he had created three new military units to strengthen security in the provinces bordering Ukraine. These units will be named after the provinces they are protecting: Belgorod, Bryansk, and Kursk. Minister Belousov emphasized that the task of these units is to protect local residents and Russian territory from attacks by drones and other means of attack.
On the same day, TASS news agency quoted the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations as saying that more than 122,000 people had followed the evacuation order of local authorities in Kursk, where the Ukrainian army had suddenly launched an attack deep into Russian territory since August 6.
