According to a VNA correspondent in Moscow, on December 30, Ms. Alexandra Suvorova, press secretary of the Election Campaign Committee for Russian President Vladimir Putin, announced that she had collected 500,000 signatures across the Russian Federation supporting Mr. Putin's independent candidacy in the upcoming presidential election in March 2024.

“Today, the Election Commission has counted the first signatures collected from Moscow and brought to the central headquarters. From January 5, 2024, other regions will begin to send signatures,” Suvorova said. According to her, the commission’s lawyers will begin to check all the necessary documents.
Previously, Secretary of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation (SIK), Ms. Natalya Budarina, said that SIK had registered a list of 346 people authorized by President Putin to help him campaign for the upcoming presidential election.
On December 18, Mr. Putin also personally submitted his candidacy documents to the Russian Central Election Commission to register as a candidate for the presidential position in the 2024 election. Mr. Putin became the first person to submit his candidacy documents as an independent candidate.
After submitting all the required documents as prescribed by law, the independent candidate must collect at least 300,000 signatures from voters in at least 40 regions to submit to the Central Election Commission. After this step, the independent candidate is considered to have completed all necessary procedures and is recognized as a candidate for the presidential position.
In 2018, Mr. Putin also ran as an independent candidate.
