Using robots to create art, female student in Hanoi surprises many people

VTC NewsVTC News16/03/2025

A 12th grade student in Hanoi created an artistic work performed by a robot, leaving many people amazed.

From March 15-21, at the Center for Appraisal and Exhibition of Fine Arts and Photography (Hanoi), the art exhibition "Identity" took place with nearly 40 works of diverse genres and materials. These works were created by 14 talented students from the Center for Talent Counseling and Development (GATE) of Vinschool.

The students’ creativity is clearly demonstrated through the use of diverse materials. In addition to traditional art forms such as painting, sculpture, and ceramics, the exhibition also introduces contemporary art works such as installation, video, conceptual, and especially New Media Art - an artistic language that combines technology and science (applying STEM knowledge) such as Bio art, Robotic art, and Coding art.

"Robotic art Work - Life" is one of the works that has received the most attention at this year's Identity exhibition.

Hoang Minh Anh, a 12B1 student at Vinschool Central Park, the author of the product, said that he is passionate about STEM science, so he is used to looking at problems clearly, coherently, and empirically, while art is very emotional and does not have any specific answers.

When the teachers gave the assignment to create a "Robotic art" piece, Minh Anh could not imagine what similarities there were between robots and drawing.

To find the intersection between STEM and art, Minh Anh and her teammates challenged themselves through many directions. Finally, the female student found that emotional intersection expressed through the work "Work - Life". The work puts the robot in a constant struggle to maintain stability and balance from two power sources - a metaphor for the journey to find balance between work and personal life of modern people.

The work

The work "Work - Life" depicts the message of a robot constantly struggling to maintain stability from two power sources.

Sharing the same vision of applying STEM to art, My Linh shared that cultivating mushrooms in To Lich River was originally part of another STEM project. This type of mushroom produces a pink-red color like the color of blood. However, when the experimental sample was put into a real environment, it turned yellow. In some ways, the work did not achieve the perfection that the authors initially envisioned and expected. However, the metaphor of the sacred connection between the individual and the source of energy of the nation was still fully expressed.

The representative of the exhibition organizing committee said that multimedia art is a temporary name for the concept of "new media art", an art form that uses materials, scientific means, techniques, and technology to express a message or thought of the creator.

Coding art, bio art, robot art are different forms of multimedia art, which were born in the 60s and 70s in Western countries. In Vietnam, many artists pursuing multimedia art face obstacles in accessing and expanding their public files due to the stereotype of art with traditional forms of expression.

Visual artist Ha Chau Bao Nhi - one of the advisors of the student group commented: "We are living in an era where science and technology are indispensable. Therefore, it is obvious that artists feel urged to create works using scientific materials such as biology, robotics, and programming. Art and science are gradually no longer separated."

According to the female artist, in practice, the process of creating multimedia artwork is similar to doing science. First, you have to come up with a hypothesis, then research, test and prove whether that hypothesis is feasible or not.

Multimedia art is not a work of art for entertainment but will lead viewers to think. The speed of scientific and technological development in Vietnam is very fast. That is the basis for multimedia art to have the opportunity to establish a position in the general flow of art.

Each work displayed at the Identity exhibition bears the unique mark of each student, not only reflecting concerns about social issues such as the environment, gender, feminism, ethnicity, memory and individual role, but also evoking empathy in the community through many different forms of expression.
