RT reported on February 13 that Russian President Vladimir Putin had a phone call with Syrian government head Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa, the first since the collapse of former President Bashar al-Assad's government in this Middle Eastern country.
According to the Kremlin, Mr. Putin said that Moscow supports the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. The Russian leader stressed the importance of stabilizing the situation in the country and promoting dialogue between all ethnic, religious and political groups in Syrian society.
"Putin reaffirmed Russia's unwavering determination to contribute to improving the social and economic situation in Syria, including by providing humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people," the Kremlin said in a statement. The Russian president also praised the historic friendship between the two countries, which he said were "bound by mutually beneficial cooperation."

The Kremlin said the high-level phone call was “constructive, businesslike and meaningful” and discussed trade, economy and education. The call followed Russia’s first diplomatic visit to Syria since the country’s leadership changed in December 2024.
For his part, Mr. Ahmed emphasized "the close strategic relationship between the two countries and Syria's openness to all parties" in a way that serves "the interests of the Syrian people and enhances Syria's stability and security." Accordingly, the two leaders exchanged "views on the current situation in Syria and the political roadmap for building a new Syria."

The Syrian side's statement also said that President Putin had issued "an official invitation to Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani to visit Russia," according to AFP.
Russia now hopes to continue using its air and naval bases in Syria under a new government, but a Kremlin statement on the call made no mention of the discussion, Reuters reported.
