(CLO) Investigators will begin the second day of questioning impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol at 2 p.m. today (January 16) over the martial law order, according to South Korea's anti-corruption agency.

The Corruption Investigation Office for Senior Officials (CIO) said the session was rescheduled from morning to afternoon after Mr. Yoon requested a postponement due to health reasons.

Mr. Yoon spent the night in a detention center after more than 10 hours of questioning at the CIO office in Gwacheon, south of Seoul, on Wednesday. He faces charges of rebellion and abuse of power related to the declaration of martial law on December 3. The CIO said he refused to answer any questions on Wednesday.

During his interrogation, impeached President Yoon will be held in an isolated cell at the Seoul Detention Center. Although the center's name evokes the capital city of Seoul, the actual facility is located about 22 kilometers away, in Uiwang City, Gyeonggi Province.

Previously, many high-ranking figures such as former President Park Geun Hye and Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y Lee were also detained at this center. However, Mr. Yoon will undergo a more special detention process than ordinary prisoners.

Interrogation and special conditions

Mr. Yoon was taken to the Corruption Investigation Office for Senior Officials (CIO), an agency tasked with investigating government officials and their families for corruption and serious crimes.

However, the CIO does not have the power to prosecute the president and must refer the case to the prosecutor's office for further action. The interrogations will be recorded on video to ensure transparency and avoid disputes over testimony.

In the interrogation area, Mr. Yoon will have a resting area equipped with sofas. Although the interrogation could last for several days, the authorities only have 48 hours to complete the interrogation process, after which they must seek a detention order from the court or release him.

Meal costs 1,600 won (about 28,000 VND)

After the interrogation, Mr. Yoon will be transferred to the Seoul Detention Center. Based on his background and status, Mr. Yoon will likely be held in a separate room, which is larger and more comfortable than the standard 6.56 square meter cells.

Before being taken to his cell, Mr. Yoon will undergo a simple health and identity check. Then he will begin his prison life, waking up at 6:30 a.m. and turning off the lights at 9 p.m., just like other prisoners.

The Korea Correctional Service, which runs the prisons, provides inmates with about 2,500 calories a day. The menu includes simple but nutritious dishes such as bean sprout soup, grilled beef, kimchi and pepper, and costs about 1,600 won (about 28,000 VND) per meal.

Authorities have up to 20 days from the time of his arrest to decide whether to prosecute Mr. Yoon. Within the first 48 hours, they will have to ask a court to issue a formal arrest warrant, considering the possibility that Mr. Yoon may have tampered with evidence or influenced a witness.
