There are no official reports of casualties or damage in Myanmar. A Myanmar Fire Service Department official said rescuers were combing Yangon to assess the situation. Images posted on social media from Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, showed collapsed buildings and debris strewn on the streets.

The earthquake also caused panic in the Thai capital Bangkok, with many people running into the streets in a state of panic. Some witnesses reported that water spilled out of swimming pools due to the strong shaking. A building under construction in the Chatuchak district collapsed, trapping people inside. The Thai government has suspended some subway and light rail services in Bangkok for safety checks.

Myanmar sits on the Sagaing fault line, which has seen several major earthquakes in the past. The most recent major quake was in 2016, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, killing three people and damaging many ancient structures in Bagan.
