On the evening of January 24, President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife left Ho Chi Minh City, successfully concluding his State visit to Vietnam from January 23-24, at the invitation of President Vo Van Thuong and his wife.

Seeing off the delegation at Tan Son Nhat International Airport were: Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Ngo Minh Chau, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu, Vietnamese Ambassador to Germany Vu ​​Quang Minh, representatives of leaders of departments and bureaus of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ho Chi Minh City Department of Foreign Affairs.

During his visit to Vietnam, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife laid a wreath at the Monument to the Heroes and Martyrs (Bac Son Street - Hanoi).

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier attended the official welcoming ceremony, held talks, witnessed the signing of cooperation documents, met with the press and had a reception with President Vo Van Thuong; met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.

At the talks and meetings, Vietnamese leaders warmly welcomed German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier's State visit to Vietnam, expressing their belief that the visit will contribute to strengthening friendship and political trust, creating momentum to comprehensively promote the Vietnam-Germany Strategic Partnership, for the benefit of the people of the two countries, for peace, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

Thanking the Vietnamese leaders for their warm and respectful reception, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed his impression of Vietnam's dynamic socio-economic development; emphasizing that over the past nearly 50 years, the close ties and mutual trust between the two countries have been continuously consolidated and developed; affirming his desire to strengthen multi-faceted cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the fields of trade-investment, energy transition, labor and vocational training, development cooperation, as well as closely coordinating to contribute to peace and regional and global cooperation issues.

The Vietnamese leader emphasized that in its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization and diversification of international relations, Vietnam always attaches importance to and prioritizes developing relations with Germany.

On this occasion, the Vietnamese leaders thanked the State, Government and people of Germany for supporting and helping Vietnam in preventing and fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating the friendship and solidarity between the two countries, contributing to helping Vietnam repel the pandemic and soon reopen and restore socio-economic development.

In an atmosphere of trust and mutual understanding, the leaders of the two countries discussed major directions and measures to further deepen the Vietnam-Germany Strategic Partnership and shared regional and international issues of mutual concern.

During his visit to Vietnam, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited the Temple of Literature and met and talked with groups of students and trainees from various fields preparing to study and work in Germany.

In Ho Chi Minh City, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier met with leaders of the City People's Committee and visited the German House. In Binh Duong, the delegation visited and interacted with lecturers and students of the Vietnam-Germany University in Ben Cat town.

The wife of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Ms. Elke Büdenbender, and the wife of the President, Ms. Phan Thi Thanh Tam, watched a water puppet show at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre.

The State visit to Vietnam by President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife takes place in the context of bilateral relations continuing to deepen and have substantial developments in many fields.

Even more meaningful, this is President Frank-Walter Steinmeier's first foreign visit in 2024 and the first high-level official visit between the two countries in the new year 2024 - a pivotal year towards the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2025.

This is the second visit of a German President to Vietnam in the history of relations between the two countries since Germany's reunification. 17 years ago, German President Horst Kohler visited Vietnam in May 2007.
